“It is that level of


convenience that keeps Screwfix winning”


There seems to be no end to Screwfix’s winning streak. The retailer certainly seems to be able to do no wrong in its parent’s eyes – leaving its older sibling B&Q no doubt feeling a pang of annoyance every time it has to report declines and store closures, whilst Screwfix shines with yet another great period of growth and new openings to boot. Looking at the breakdown of Kingfisher’s latest results, I calculated the sales per suare metre in B&Q and Screwfix stores and, with B&Q’s £843 per square metre compared with Screwfix’s £22,718, the business is getting a lot of bang for its buck. Of course the retail sales space quoted for Screwfix is only the trade counter space, not including the stockholding out the back, and this is only 10% of the overall building size but it still an impressive figure. With that square meterage working overtime, one would


probably baulk at the cost of running a big box store in comparison – no wonder Bunnings focuses on running a no-frills business. But, of course, it’s a very different model and Screwfix does not strive to create an inviting retail environment where its customers can browse at their leisure – it’s all about time, money and efficiency. With major building work going on at my own house at the moment, I have seen first-hand the value of a tradesperson having a merchant or retailer they can depend on for stock availability and the complete convenience of buying what they want, where they want and exactly when they need it. And it is that level of convenience that keeps Screwfix winning and is allowing it plenty of room to grow both here and abroad.

Screwfix appoints Jim Chadwick as head of trade


Home Hardware head of buying Jim Chadwick has left the dealer-owned wholesale distributor to join the multi- channel retailer of trade tools, accessories and hardware products Screwfix today in the role of head of trade. Jim has worked for Home


Hardware since November 2015, managing a team of buyers with a wide portfolio of


DIY, home, garden and leisure products.


Prior to that he spent 17 years at The Range, latterly as a buyer.


Jim said: “The developments at Home Hardware, particularly with the expansion of own-label products, will continue after I have gone. The buying team will continue to manage the supplier relationships.”


Boyd Douglas-Davies awarded pearson memorial medal


Boyd Douglas-Davies, CEO of Hillview Garden Centres, was awarded the HTA Pearson Memorial Medal at the HTA Garden Futures dinner, which took place at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire on 4 October. This award, in memory of


the HTA’s first general secretary Charles Pearson, is presented annually to an individual for outstanding service to the

Former CEO of Webbs of Wychbold, he is now CEO of Hillview Garden Centres. The group now comprises of 11 garden centres across middle England. Developments at the centres include refurbished plant and horticultural departments along with extended catering facilities and the introduction of hugely successful soft play barns.


New business development manager at Home Hardware


Home Hardware announced that Adam Southall has recently joined the company as business development manager for the Midlands and Wales.


Mr Southall has previous experience in flooring and mobility product retail management. His role will involve visiting members, informing them of hardware services with the objective of maximising their business as well as recruiting new stores. Home Hardware chief

Home Hardware Southwest has appointed Michael Smith in the new role of head of sales. His role will include overseeing the sales team as well as developing new business. Mr Smith has over 20 years of experience in sales, 15 of these being in housewares with such companies as Rayware, Pyrex, Everyware Global and World Kitchen.


He has worked as an area
