RANGE REVIEW: PET & BIRDCARE

The dog treats are made

from natural ingredients, are hypoallergenic, free from preservatives, additives and even gluten – all while maintaining a low calorie content – a description you could imagine fitting for even the fussiest of human diets, let alone for a pampered pooch.

Ms Scott adds: “In the pet food industry, the consumer is definitely becoming more careful about what they feed to their pets, causing a recent trend of humanisation in pet food products. This has moved beyond flavours to ensuring nutritional benefits, ingredient quality and manufacturing standards of pet foods are as high as human food. “The provenance of pet foods

products has become a primary buying choice for consumers. With many pet brands being produced overseas, our British customers like the fact that they are buying a UK produced pet treat and this along with the health benefits of a fish diet have been the main contributors to our early success.”

Feeding the birds

When it comes to caring for wild birds, many garden centres offer consumers a well-stocked section, including a variety of nesting boxes, tables and feeders together with all kinds of foodstuff. Leading garden products supplier Gardman has noted a significant increase in sales for this sector. “We have seen the wild birdcare category in growth for the past five years; over this time we see trends that occur in other categories are now appearing here,” says Mark Portman. “With consumers asking for a more convenient offer to feed wild birds and looking for a more premium offer, we launched a pre- filled Ready to Feed range and a Supreme range with food and sacks in resealable containers and screw- top pouches.” As one of Gardman’s key

retailers, Monkton Elm explains why its customers are getting so picky about the bird food they purchase: “Our birdcare section has grown and grown over the years from its humble beginnings

as two small wooden crates filled with loose seed and peanuts, to a massive department that needs restocking every week,” says Steve Searle. “Our customers are very particular about the quality of the food they feed to their birds and we only stock the best fresh foods from Tom Chambers, Westlands

and Gardman. These companies are very geared up with scientific knowledge of what birds need for their daily dietary needs. It seems the birds are eating better than us when I see customers going round our store with the trolley filled to the brim with just bird food and other birdcare-related products.

CREOSEALPLUS helps to protect the wood against the detrimental effects of the weather and has a colour which lasts and lasts.

CREOSEAL'S FENCE CARE covers most fencing in one coat and is available in four colours, with a high resistance to fading.
