MERCHANT FOCUS: STRUKTA KEEPING THE CUSTOMER WORKING

Specialist builders merchant Strukta is all about its people and its processes, as it explains to BMJ.

F

ormed in 2013, strukta Group was the merger of two family businesses: Southern Building Supplies and Coastline Building Products. With extensive industry knowledge, a wealth of experience and excellent working relationships with their respective customers; it felt like the right decision all round.

Fast forward to 2023; and strukta has acquired SNS Building Products; expanding its store portfolio and adding a further £6.5 million turnover to the group. With both companies having long histories of delivering exceptional customer service backed up by large stocks, and next day or same day delivery; they’re confident that the acquisition will only strengthen their offering in the market.

The geography of the SNS customer base and two local stores aligned well; extending their presence, adding to the current 7-strong portfolio of Trade Stores filling in and the gaps for strukta, but as chairman Adrian Diffney notes, it wasn’t all about location with the SNS product offering feeling like an “easy fit”. Managing director Myles Moggach adds: “When we talk about being a specialist merchant; it’s less about selling specialist products, and more about being specialist in

the ranges we do sell. Whilst we don’t stock heavy side materials, such as brick, block and timber we have comprehensive stocks on items such as drainage, brickwork sundries, insulation and roofing sundries”. He adds “a more specific range means we’re able to invest time and resource into strengthening supply chains to ensure excellent stock levels; and training our teams to have the requisite product knowledge to support the customer in his projects in a way that meets his needs. We aim to differentiate our stores, by having teams who really understand the ranges – it’s about selling what we sell, well”.

Plot packing

Alongside the general building product range, the provision of lintels also forms a significant chunk of their product offering, with over 14,000 stock steel lintels housed at their dedicated yard: all available for next day delivery to site. Moggach says: “People are at the heart of everything we do here at strukta and making life easier for our customers is, and has always been, a top priority for us”. With that in mind, they offer a plot packing service as part of the lintel operation, which supports housebuilders in more effective, scheduled planning. Diffney says: “It’s one of

the things we are recognised for, our ability to plot pack lintels for housebuilder customers, according to their various needs for the different houses on each of their sites. We take all the different sizes they need for each
