KITCHENS
THE WONDERS OF WORKSTATIONS
Once considered something of a niche product, workstation sinks are fast becoming a kitchen must-have. BMJ finds out what this trend means for merchants.
O
ver the last few years, the kitchen sink has evolved. As dishwasher penetration continues to grow, the sink is being used for so much more than just crockery cleaning and is now embracing a multifunctional role within the kitchen. At the same time, the move towards open- plan living and the rise in home entertaining have also had a huge effect, with homeowners seeking out sleeker, smarter products that look and perform better than ever in the hub of their homes.
Workstation sinks, which are specifically designed for food prep, cleaning and serving, come with a plethora of smart, integrated accessories that seamlessly transform the sink space into a highly functional zone, and are providing the perfect solution.
That’s according to Daniel Boulton, sales & procurement director at Clearwater, who says that products such as the company’s multitasking Urban Smart sink, are now widely considered must-haves rather than good-to-haves. He says: “Cleverly combining style with convenience, this stainless-steel sink comes with a variety of custom-fit accessories, including a sliding wooden chopping board and stainless- steel trays, which are ideal for cleaning and draining. These smart additions are stylish and ergonomic, sit neatly on double-level bowl ledges and make food prep easier by giving users more hands-free space for tasks like rinsing vegetables or straining pasta.”
With many kitchens not having the luxury of space, particularly in urban apartments and new builds, workstation sinks are helping homeowners maximise every inch by feeing up valuable worktop space and ensuring that style and ergonomics aren’t sacrificed in smaller footprints. The latest workstation sinks come in a variety of sizes to suit every space.
Materials of the moment Boulton says that, being durable, hygienic and sustainable, stainless steel is still the most popular material for kitchen sinks, but homeowners are increasingly embracing the different sink materials that are now readily available, with granite, ceramic and PVD finishes taking some market share.
“Being able to offer homeowners a wider choice of materials that cater for every taste and budget can really help merchants capitalise on the workstation sink trend and boost sales,” he explains.
“At Clearwater, we’re seeing demand for our coloured Quarex workstation sinks rise as the trends for colour and texture continue in the kitchen, availible in seven colours, including the newly launched Nude, with the addition of this versatile shade providing even more sales opportunities for merchants.”
Featuring 80% quartz and enriched with silver ions, Quarex sinks have an advanced anti-bac surface, which reduces the growth of bacteria and microbes by as much as 80%. As well as

being dirt-repellent and easy to clean, granite is also able to withstand scratches, impacts and high temperatures.
Size matters
Yes, size matters in sinks. Double and 1.5 bowl sinks provide homeowners with flexibility and practicality, which, Boulton says, is why they remain such enduringly popular choices. “However, they aren’t always a viable option in smaller homes, which is often where the sink needs to offer homeowners even more functionality. Here, innovative workstation models really come into their own with models such as our Kameo-X sink offering the benefits of multiple bowls despite its compact design. “Fitting a 600mm cabinet, it features a generous single bowl and a separate drainage outlet, which also acts as the sink’s overflow to enable the main bowl to be used to its maximum depth. And crucially, it comes with the ‘Smart’ accessory rail system, with its accessory ledge accommodating a chopping board and folding stainless steel draining mat to cater for a variety of tasks within a small space.”
Manufacturers are also developing stainless steel sinks that prioritise quiet operation. At Clearwater, some of the stainless steel workstation sinks are treated with sound absorbing SilentCote® thermal paint on the underside to reduce noise while also helping to keep the water in the bowl warmer for longer. Thoughtful features such as these genuinely appeal to homeowners who recognise their lifestyle enhancing benefits.
Accessorise all areas
Boulton adds: “For merchants, the shift towards multifunctional, workstation sinks offers valuable upsell opportunities, which can really help to boost margins. Most manufacturers now offer a variety of accessories from drainers and colanders to trays and chopping boards, which can be combined with an existing model to transform it into a workstation sink. Designed to bring more functionality to the kitchen, many come in a range of finishes, which is extending the reach of workstation sinks even further.” BMJ
