LANDSCAPING

in three new colours, Pose Beige, Outlook Grey and Stance Dark.

Cullis notes that the Porcelain Cladding is becoming increasingly popular in landscape projects and Global Stone are delighted to include it in their cladding range a new design in three colours: Charcoal, Pebble and Lady Grey. “Our Cladding Range is available in a variety of colours and three different designs. Proving popular it can be used both externally and internally and is great for a wide range of applications. Easy and quick to use, it is the low maintenance cladding option.”

Meanwhile at Marshalls, head of brand marketing Neil Burke-Thompson says that natural stone paving is still the most popular option when it comes to garden patios. “From granite to sandstone, Yorkstone to marble, not only are there vast differences in the types of natural stone you can choose between, but every paving slab is unique too,” he says. “When you’re buying natural stone, you’re buying a piece of history; Marshalls Scoutmoor paving was made over 365 million years ago and you can find it at Trafalgar Square amongst other landmarks.” Here too, the company is seeing a growing number of people choosing porcelain paving for its low maintenance properties and natural look.

Neutral coloured patio paving remains the most popular for new garden designs, says Burke-Thompson. “Neutral or natural colours, such as Buff and Cream, can really enhance the colours of a garden, and can easily be co- ordinated with garden furniture too. “Furthermore, Grey paving is still one of the most popular colours, as it complements both traditional and contemporary homes. With grey tones still popular for home interiors, grey paving is a great way to extend the household into the outdoor space. The combination of the coloured paving against the contrasting vibrant hues of the flowers, can create an inviting atmosphere to any garden.”

A popular trend within garden paving is using contrasting colours to really identify and delineate the separate use of spaces, and even creating ‘rugs’ using patterned paving. The garden is an extension of a home. “With this in mind, Marshalls have seen pattern paving rise in popularity, which gives the homeowner the ability to reinvent their outdoor space with the use of their imagination. Marshalls’ new SYMPHONY® Matte can be used to create a stylish patio.“

Good garden designers thrive on creating spaces that meet their customers’ needs, and as most people like to both relax and entertain in their gardens, seating is a priority. “Adding an outdoor kitchen is a great way of transforming summer gatherings for the homeowners. Barbecue grills, prep stations, outdoor bar, pizza ovens, counters are a great way of impressing homeowners’ family and friends. As the British summer arrives, we know that family and friends gravitate towards the outdoors, we can agree that al fresco cooking is better than staying inside.”

A trend that Bradstone has noticed is for interior decor ideas to be replicated outdoors, says Lee Dunderdale, product manager. “These days whatever look can be achieved indoors, homeowners want externally too. At Bradstone, we make it our mission to stay ahead of consumer expectation through investing in new product development and creating unique range extensions, taking inspiration from consumers, our partners and the latest interior design trends from around the world. The shift in consumer attitudes towards investing in the outdoors for the long term is driving a desire for premium paving and consequently a significant opportunity for manufacturers and suppliers alike.” Some of the products Dunderdale has seen increasing interest in includes porcelain, which has become a popular alternative to natural stone. “A durable and scratch-resistant paver, porcelain is a good option for ‘lived-in’ gardens that get a lot of use. Porcelain is non-porous and doesn’t require sealant, making it simple and easy for the installer too. And with a wide choice of shades available, customers don’t

need to compromise on style. It’s because of these many benefits that porcelain presents a very real opportunity for merchants to trade customers up and charge a premium.” Here too, the grey trend shows no sign of abating. “As the trend towards grey interiors shows no sign of slowing down, more homeowners are beginning to introduce this colour in their outdoor landscaping in order to create a seamless flow from the indoor to their outdoor space. In response to this, Bradstone offers a number of modern, grey paving options, including Mode Profiled and Aspero, ideal for garden patios, and StoneMaster driveway block paving.

Outdoor space

A big trend in 2019, which will continue into this year, Dunderdale has noticed, is creating the perfect outdoor room. “Many homeowners want an outdoor space to reflect their own personal style and as such, statement furniture pieces and outdoor kitchens are becoming a common theme. In order to create a fluid transition between the home and the garden, Bradstone offers a 10mm thick paving option in some of its porcelain ranges. This is thinner than the outdoor range, so homeowners can create a continuous flow between the two areas.” Dunderdale adds: “Pattern and texture will be making a resurgence in our gardens in 2020. Patterned pavers offer installers endless design opportunities – it can be used as edging, to separate paving and soft planting, or randomly placed throughout the patio, allowing homeowners to create a patio truly unique to themselves. Bradstone’s Manzano Mosaic comes in 12 individual design motifs that can be creatively incorporated into hard landscaping schemes.

“Finally, edging remains a popular choice for homeowners, to neatly frame the garden’s external circumference but also to demarcate designated areas of the garden or to separate hard and soft landscaping zones. A particularly popular look this year is towards horizontal edging, where the edging
