10 MINUTES WITH: TIM BARDGETT

Regional sales director – South, Xtratherm

What is your current role and how long have you been doing it?

Regional sales director – South, I joined Xtratherm in June 2018 so approaching 2 years.

What does your role entail?

I am responsible for the Southern sales structure looking after the sales, business development and the specification team. My role is extremely varied from commercial responsibility for the region, through to supporting team members deliver a CPD and everything in-between. It’s my responsibility to ensure the region delivers the businesses overall objectives and strategy for the year. Myself and the team are completely focused on delivering our added value proposition to our partners, stockists and end users.

How did you get started in this industry? I started in the industry in 2006 with an external sales role with the specialist insulation distributor SIG. I thoroughly enjoyed the role initially looking after Cornwall as a territory. It was a very steep learning curve when I first joined but had great support from my colleagues at the time, quickly enabling me to develop my product knowledge and understanding of our unique industry.

What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? I’ve held various roles within our sector, external sales, business development, sales management and technical positions. I have a passion for energy efficiency and the built environment. Due to this I have a broad knowledge specific to a construction sales environment. I am equally comfortable talking to and Architect about building regulations or negotiating pricing with a commercial director.

What would you like to achieve in your role?

I would like to position Xtratherm as a partner of choice within the industry, known for our high level of technical knowledge, market leading external sales team and innovative approach. Supporting our partners and stockist to develop and grow their respective businesses.

What has been the highlight of your career so far (can be more than one!)? Being nominated for a BMJ Award of course! In all seriousness although honoured to have been nominated for a BMJ Award this year it’s seeing the development of my team and their

10

achievements that gives me the most pride and is truly the highlight of my career.

What do you see as the main issues for builders’ merchants and for the construction industry at the moment? We need to inject some confidence back into the marketplace, it’s no doubt that 2019 was a tough trading year in terms of market conditions. We do however now have a majority government in power which will hopefully provide clear direction for the country and our industry. Another challenge for many Builders Merchants is keeping informed of the forthcoming changes to building regulations – We are currently in a period of consultation for changes to Part L (The Conservation of fuel & power) these changes should come into play later this year. This is a great time for the builder’s merchants to work with Xtratherm and engage with their customers and give guidance on the best way to achieve compliance to the new regulations.

If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

We have two ears and one mouth for a reason! Listen. In my early career my enthusiasm could get the better of me. I have learnt the importance of listening to your customers, take time to truly understand what they are trying to achieve, their challenges, their successes, their goals and ambitions. It’s only when you truly understand this you can add exceptional value to their business.

Football, rugby, cycling, golf or gardening – which one’s more likely to keep you busy at the weekends?

Cycling- I hope to make a return to some Cross- Country Mountain Bike Racing in 2020 looking to race in some selected Regional and National Events.

If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking? Bottle of Corona (with lime!) or a glass of Rioja.

What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?

Book: It’s not about the Bike – Lance Armstrong …. I know it’s a bit controversial. Film: I Am Legend

If you could be a superhero, what super- power would you choose?

The ability to fly…. I live in Cornwall so this would be very handy for work!
