AND FINALLY
Jewson hosts annual ‘Monster’ fundraising event
National merchant Jewson recently held its fourth annual ‘Monster’ event raising vital funds for its official charity partner, Band of Builders.
The T20 Monster Blast saw six teams of cricket players from Jewson’s business units based around the UK fight it out to be the Grand Final winners. As well as Jewson colleagues, the mixed- sex teams were also made up of staff from some of Jewson’s key suppliers and players from Tickhill Cricket Club in Doncaster, where the tournament was held. Jewson’s Monster events are the brainchild of its Client and Community Development Director, Barry Hilling, with the first, the Monster Marathon, taking place in 2016. In 2021, the Monster Walk saw around 800 Jewson colleagues, customers, suppliers and local organisations walk 130 miles across five days from Widnes to Hull. On top of the charity walk, members of the Jewson Executive Team set themselves an additional challenge of running, cycling, walking, swimming and rowing the distance between all 483 Jewson branches across the UK, equating to 7,388 miles on land and 247 miles on water. And in 2022, around 400 Jewson colleagues took part in the Monster Splash, a triathlon at Manvers Lake in Rotherham.
All four Monster events held by Jewson have raised funds for Band of Builders, which supports tradespeople and their families during times of need. Other fundraising activities take place throughout the year for the charity, including initiatives like the annual Big Brew, which encourages tradespeople to connect over a hot drink in a bid to remove the taboo around mental health in the construction industry.
RRT Team conquers Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge
A team from Russell Roof Tiles (RRT) has completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, raising the single largest amount this year, with £6,000 being added to the charity pot.

Robert Price helps Llantilio Pertholey School make bird boxes
Robert Price Builders Merchants donated 20 lengths of timber to Llantilio Pertholey School, which helped them make 60 bird boxes.
The students had been learning about their “Saving the World” topic, which sparked an interest in increasing the wildlife around the school grounds with bird
boxes. The school was unable to fund the project so they
reached out to their local Timber Mechants, Robert Price, to see if they could help.
Vice Chair of the PTFA, Elaine, said: “The children took great care in researching the different styles of boxes for different birds and planned a wide variety of shapes to include as many species as possible. “Without Robert Price’s donation, this activity could simply not have taken place.”
The bird boxes will help to encourage spring wildlife nesting in the school grounds, whilst woodworking is also a rewarding skill that helps to teach and encourage creativity, problem solving and craftsmanship.
Selco starts “Hedgehog Highway” campaign
Selco Builders Warehouse has started a “Hedgehog Highways” campaign after introducing a new product designed to help boost hedgehog numbers. The builders merchant is playing its part in trying to secure the future of the UK’s hedgehogs by stocking Supreme Pro Hedgehog Hole Gravel Boards across its 75 stores, and the product is also available online. The gravel boards act as a barrier between fence panels and damp ground but feature a 13cm access hope to allow hedgehogs to safely pass through and travel freely in and out of neighbouring gardens and green spaces. Carine Jessamine, Selco Builders Warehouse marketing director, said: “We are delighted

to be offering homeowners around the UK the chance to make their outdoor spaces more wildlife friendly by stocking the hedgehog gravel boards.” Hedgehogs have experienced a dramatic decline in recent years and are thought to have declined by up to 75% in rural areas since 2000. In 2020 they were listed as vulnerable to extinction on the Red List for Britain’s Mammals. Hedgehog Officer for
Hedgehog Street, Grace Johnson, is delighted to see this new addition to Selco’s range. Johnson also said: “One of the key threats facing British hedgehogs is habitat fragmentation with buildings, walls and fences limiting their nightly movement and isolating populations.
“Creating Hedgehog Highways and offering hedgehog friendly gravel boards are a fantastic, and easy-to-install solution to this problem, providing the access that hedgehogs so desperately need. We are delighted to see Selco Builders Warehouse acting responsibly and adding these products to their range.”
test of endurance, which involves a 24-mile (38.6km) round trip route and a 1585m (5200ft) ascent, pushing employees to their very limits.
Lead Organiser Alan Young, regional sales director at RRT, said: “It was a difficult challenge for all involved, but everyone completed it in under 12 hours, which was a huge achievement in itself.”
