BMF All Industry Conference 2023

Left to Right:

Ian Mcconville, Steve Duke and Mike Beard

FAD, Government policy Mike Beard, merchant development director at Encon

Beard began the workshop by briefing delegates on the government’s latest energy efficiency policy. “The reason for having the three of us is to represent three different strands within the industry. For myself, I used to work for an insulation manufacturer and now an insulation distributor. We’ve got a government policy over the last decade which has got us nowhere, and in fact we’re worse off than when we started the last government. If we were to achieve net zero by 2050, we would need to insulate a property every two minutes. The current government pledged to spend £9 billion but they will have only

spent £6 billion by the end of this term. Is there really a political world to join everything together to achieve net zero? If there is, then we as an industry should be part of that and benefit from it. The government’s recent energy strategy excludes any detail about how they are going to achieve it. The Great British Insulation Scheme has been launched however it is going to do very little to kick off the process. It might impact 300,000 homes which leaves over 19 million homes left to do. Don’t be fooled by government press or the media. There is a realistic opportunity but currently we’re nowhere near achieving it.”
