The continuing pace of development in the merchanting sector continues to complicate the compiling of these league tables. As does the pace at which the companies report their financial results, and the fact that different companies have different financial year ends. For example, the majority of the top UK builders merchants have financial years which run from January to December, others don’t, so we cannot compare like-for-like in all cases. This means, for example, that EH Smith’s 12 months to June 30 2024 and Wolseley’s to July 31 2024 are up against the Haldane Group’s 12 months to December 31 2023, and Robert Price’s to September 30 2023.
