PLUMBING AND HEATING

STH Westco adds multilayer pipe

The new multilayer pipe system from STH Westco is tailored for high-pressure applications, and offers a comprehensive range of components, benefits, and applications.

that are qualified to fit heat pumps, which Wilkins says Vaillant has worked to address through its training offering.

He explains: “Ultimately, these factors drive manufacturers to a point where they face a potential fine. Under UK Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (UK GAAP) there is a requirement to accrue for a potential fine at the same time as the products attracting the potential fine are sold. So, under the current CHMM proposals, even though we will not make any payments until next year, we need to make financial provision for our best estimate of the potential fine this year.

Boiler levy

“This is why we communicated with our merchant partners in December, that from January 1st 2024, Vaillant will pass on the cost of our estimated liability through a levy on all boiler sales under 70kW.

“The reason we have opted for a separate levy on top of our current prices is that this provides a faster and more flexible way to adjust prices as the CHMM develops. So, if we find that we’re on track to hit the CHMM targets we can act accordingly.” He adds: “We are fairly confident it will happen as the original consultation response described. We have some challenges with the mechanism, including the aforementioned shortage of qualified installers and the lack of transparency in terms of the numbers of MCS heat pump installations.

“There is also an urgent need to rebalance gas and electricity prices to give the customer a clear financial reason to buy a heat pump. “Vaillant has engaged with the government over the last 18 months during the consultation to try to shape this policy into something that is workable for everyone. We are still working with the government to propose alternate solutions which we think would be preferable to all, helping to drive the growth in the market and allow

manufacturers to record all heat pump sales not just MCS installations.

“We would also hope that government keep a close eye on the market in the coming months, because they have the opportunity to adjust the CHMM through review.” He says: “What is clear is that the transition towards low carbon heating technologies in the UK will continue, with heat pumps becoming a little more mainstream particularly in the new build sector.

“The Future Homes Standard is due to take effect in 2025, so we expect to see some early adopters in the housing development sector move towards low carbon technologies as an alternative to boilers.”

Wilkins says Vaillant did see an uplift to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) last year, which increased the maximum grant for a heat pump installation to £7,500.

The government has also promised another round of funding after 2025, which should see positive effects on one-off heat pump installations – good news for installers working in this space.

He says: “We anticipate the publication of the Improving Boiler Standards and Efficiency consultation responses from the government in the early part of this year. This should help to shape the direction of travel for the future of heating technologies and may also include a hydrogen-ready boiler mandate.

Hydrogen update

“We already know from the government’s hydrogen strategy update that the government will be making a strategic decision about the use of hydrogen in 2026.” Wilkins points out that we are seeing more in the way of smart and WiFi-enabled heating controls on traditional boilers.

Its latest offering has leaned into this to ensure it is providing the end-users with efficiency and connectivity.

Applications include: • Drinking water installations • Radiator connections • Radiant heating and cooling systems • Underfloor heating • Industrial pipeline systems for food, elec- trical, and chemical transportation • Condensed, filtered, and mineral water pipeline systems • High-pressure air duct systems • Agricultural pipeline systems

All components of the multilayer system range are developed and manufactured under the same roof and therefore perfectly matched to each other. Key advantages include:

• Entirely corrosion-resistant • A barrier against the permeation of oxy- gen and light • High flexibility with inherent stability • Excellent hydrostatic stress performance • Lightweight and easy to handle • Smooth inner walls reduce pressure loss

ecoTEC plus boiler launched in 2023, we have also introduced myVAILLANT connect, a brand-new gateway which provides a connected heating system solution for end users. For installers, the installation of the new gateway couldn’t be easier, with a simple one-cable plug and play solution. “The heat pump market is developing exponentially, and we’ve noticed that R290 is rapidly becoming the “heat transfer fluid choice” for newer heat pump models, due to its low Global Warming potentials and higher temperatures for hot water. At Vaillant, we are pleased to say that we are ahead of the curve with this, as we launched our aroTHERM plus air source heat pump which utilises R290, back in 2020.” BMJ
