PEOPLE 10 MINUTES WITH: PETER BEAUMONT Managing director at Monty Miracle
What is your current role and how long have you been doing it? I’m a director at Monty Miracle, the exterior cleaning solution that requires no aggressive jet-washing and is gentler on all surfaces such as patios, paths, decking and driveways, needing just 10 minutes to take effect. My uncle founded the company a few years ago - we’re a real family business - but we have only recently got the patent.
What does your role entail?
So many different things! I have been going to lots of trade shows, meeting wholesalers, merchants, trade customers, end users and potential partners. Our product is loved by consumers as it’s so easy to use, but we also work with facilities managers, gardeners, groundspeople – contractors of all shapes and sizes. It keeps things busy.
How did you get started in this industry?
Through working with my uncle. He created the product after working at English Heritage - he’s passionate about the fact that popular jet-washing can ruin stone and other surfaces, and through his chemist contacts and working at Shell, was able to create this alternative which is better all round.
What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? Quite a few, mostly accounting and sales which have been particularly useful as we build the brand strategically. There’s lots of interest in the product now - sales have grown by 300% in the last 12 months.
What would you like to achieve in your role?
Continue to raise awareness of Monty Miracle, educate all the different audiences on its effectiveness and generally grow the brand into a leading home, garden and grounds maintenance product.
What has been the highlight of your career so far (can be more than one!)? I really enjoyed going to trade shows, and through our work with some leading football clubs I’ve met some pretty impressive celebrities!
What do you see as the main issues for builders merchants and for the construction industry at the moment? The same as for a lot of industries: rising costs of raw materials, increasing complexity when it comes to logistics, labour shortages, rising inflation! All happy stuff!
Travis Perkins Hire has announced its appointment of Adam Caulfield as managing director. He joins from Sunbelt Rentals UK, where he was national sales director. Before then Caulfield held managing director roles at HSS Hire & Wolseley. He has also held senior positions at coffee brand Pelican Rouge, Disney and Coca-Cola.
Lindsey Hart has been appointed as sales & marketing director of the Channel Island builders merchant NP Group, which comprises Norman Piette, Norman Piette Ecohomes, Annandale, Project, Quantum Building Supplies in Jersey, and Blanchard Building Supplies in Alderney.
Plumbing and heating merchant, City Plumbing has appointed Dominic Sarkar as commercial director. Sarkar brings over 20 years of experience in product and category management, the last seven of which were within the merchant sector.
If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
Be patient. I’m naturally enthusiastic, but it’s important to realise that things take time and cannot be rushed. Better to take your time and do it properly than rush it and have to go back and change it.
What keeps you busy at the weekends? Football. I’m a big Leeds fan, for my sins. Hoping to get Monty Miracle in the hands of the groundskeepers at Elland Road!
If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking?
I’m not a big drinker, but I’m partial to a nice single malt whisky.
What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?
A Scanner Darkly.
If you could be a superhero, what super- power would you choose?
Duplicate myself so that I could be in lots of places at the same time. It would come in very handy right now as things are getting so busy! BMJ
