VIEWPOINT

As a result of legislation changes like this, multi foil has become popular in new builds, especially in the case of Build to Rent, because it is much more energy efficient than traditional insulation. Traditional insulation solutions use materials which sit between the rafters and studs of a property. This dates to early construction when the timbers provided better insulation than anything else which could be used for insulation. This is still common practice but there are much more effective solutions to improve energy efficiency.

The traditional method requires the use of timbers which measure up to 225mm or more. This is far thicker than is required for structural strength and, since just 40mm of multi foil insulation can provide the same thermal resistance as 100mm of glass wool, many builders are choosing to reject tradition and use multi foil insulation instead. Additionally, in timber frame and

modular housing construction, it is also becoming common to install insulation offsite. This involves sections of the house being prefabricated in a factory specifically designed for this type of process, helping to construct very high-quality structures quickly and affordably. Insulation can be pre-applied to modular frames in this kind of offsite construction- making for a much

mileage as everything is delivered to the site together.

With new legislation and a push towards increased insulation standards, builders are increasingly turning to multi foil insulation as an alternative to

traditional insulation. Multi foil is

remaining the same. As well as its improved performance, it is

also thinner, easier to handle, and has a life expectancy of more an 50 years. BMJ
