KEYLINE DRIVES GREENER AGENDA
The distribution of building material is a carbon-heavy process. Fiona Russell-Horne talks to Keyline about what it’s doing to mitigate its effect on the planet.
I
ncreasingly, merchants’ customers are looking at the bigger picture. They don’t just want product and price – important though these things still are. They want to know how their goods are being supplied. That’s something that specialist civils and infrastructure merchant Keyline has noticed more and more, according to commercial director Chris Woollard.
“Our customers, and in fact - the whole industrys drive to mitigate risks and help shape a more sustainable world has increased exponentially. With sustainability and Environmental,Social, Governance (ESG) as a priority for customers - even at a time when we have so many different factors affecting our industry.” he says. “Our customers are increasingly looking for a supply partner that better supports their supply chain needs, and can help them with the whole picture - looking for the best possible solution for products, waste, people, vehicle emissions, how they can more positively impact the communities around them - to name just a few. For some time now, the conversation has not only been about price and availability, it’s about how we can best work together to improve our environment, the future and communities - and Keyline welcomes the opportunity to support our customers with their efforts and share the benefits of the work that we are doing as a Group.
Keyline, as part of Travis Perkins plc,is committed to lead on the ESG agenda and drive meaningful change across the industry. 2021 saw the Group launch it’s twelve ESG focus areas and a supply-chain wide approach, where together they are looking to underpin a robust social value offer, and improve behaviours in the supply chain. Part of this is their commitment to achieve Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 carbon by 2035 and to lead the industry in tackling climate change.

It’s something they have been working on for some time now. Keyline is driven to deliver safely and efficiently, with its efforts recognised by its achievement of FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) Gold status for ten years. FORS recognises exemplary levels of compliance in legal requirements, safety, fuel efficiency, and environmental improvement within fleet operations. In addition to the more practical steps Keyline takes to achieve Gold status, a very big part of how that is achieved and maintained is the focus on driver performance. Woollard explains “In addition to replacing your fleet with the latest and most efficient vehicles one the of the most effective ways to reduce your fleets carbon emissions is to look at how you are using your fleet.” This involves setting rigorous standards around how the vehicles are driven to drive down emissions. For Keyline’s nationwide fleet their emissions are monitored
by an onboard electronic telematic driver monitoring system. On every journey, the device monitors and scores the driver’s performance against five key driving disciplines: idling, accelerating, breaking, speed and cornering. It then reports this data to the branch, the driver themselves and rewards them for achievement of best practice.
Stringent requirements “FORS Gold is really important to us and our customers - who are often amazed when they find out we have it, because the requirements are so stringent. The fact that we have achieved the FORS Gold standard for ten years in a row forms a very strong part of our customer proposition,” Woollard says.
However, the strides the company has made via its commitment to FORS is only part of the picture, he continues. Sustainability goes
