March saw the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago showcase innovative products from across the industry. Sarah Selzer reports


T


he International Housewares Association (IHA) of the US, which sponsors the annual International


Home + Housewares Show in Chicago, has been around for 79 years – but still likes to adapt and change. This year’s show, which was a sell-out with


2,204 exhibitors from 47 countries, featured a focus on the smart home and connected products. The event really embraced the growing


phenomenon, with the launch of the IHA Smart Home Pavilion. This housed new and

current exhibitors displaying emerging technologies. Meanwhile, The Discover Design Expo in the


North Building was the ‘go to’ destination for high design and innovation. There were several standout aspects of the


show which helped the visitor experience and maximised the limited time of buyers. One was the New Exhibitor Preview, which


brought together 90 first-time exhibitors in one area, before the show officially opened on the first day at 10am. The initiative, which attracted more than

600 buyer and media attendees, was a great way of seeing some of the smaller or entrepreneur brands which I might have missed in my travels around the show.

The participants were mixed, so a tabletop


product might be next to a cleaning product and in turn, a smart home product, even though they were exhibiting in different halls. This gave a quick overview - and as they


were all arranged in rows, it was easy to take in the type of products on offer to see if there was something of interest.


Inventors Corner The Inventors Corner was another must-see. It comprised 60 exhibitors, many of which were just starting out or ready to embark on the next stage of their development. Notable examples included: • Smalt: an electronic salt dispenser which is Bluetooth-enabled, so you can play music at
