Ten reasons to visit Ambiente

3 Wine accessories. There seemed to be a great deal of innovation in the world of wine


accessories this year. Or did I simply take more notice as it’s become an area of special interest to me? (I write about wine and give talks on the subject, during which I demonstrate some of the best wine accessories.) In my view, the best at Ambiente included


the Vagnbys Decantiere, which performs four functions. It decants the wine as it pours from the bottle, helping to lift the wine’s aromas and flavours. It also has a built-in filter to keep wine stones and cork residues from the glass, and a pourer with a no-drip edge. Plus it acts as an air-tight stopper if you want to be sensible and save some wine for the next day. The best wine preserver I’ve come across

he Ambiente show in Frankfurt can be expensive to visit – as I always find too many things for my own


kitchen. Here are some of the new products that caught my eye this year and the reasons I keep returning to this massive fair.


1Solutions. With products from 4,454 exhibitors spread across 27 exhibition halls, it’s


not easy knowing where to start. I always head for the Solutions table. There, a


team of experts led by designer Sebastian Bergne selects 20 to 30 of the most innovative products from companies that lead the way in housewares design – such as Joseph Joseph, Oxo International, Lekue, Monkey Business Design and Adhoc. The standout products this year included:


the iCuisine Bakery Kit, which communicates weight and temperature data to a smartphone app equipped with step-by-step recipes; the Squeeze & Grate lemon juicer and zester in one from Fratelli Guzzini; a tea infuser that looks like a biscuit from Monkey Business Design; a vegetable peeler from New Soda that’s big enough to handle squash and sweet potatoes; and elastic, reusable plastic covers from Silikomart.

2Innovation. Innovation was everywhere again this year. But the stand where it shone


most belonged to THAT! from Taiwan. One of the company’s most impressive products is ThawTHAT!Modern, a defrosting tray that enables rapid heat exchange between frozen food and ambient temperature. The latest version of the tray has a barely


noticeable slant to drain water and blood, and anti-skid side padding strips to protect the table and secure the plate in its place. The plate requires no electricity or pre-soaking and is said to produce better results than thawing at room temperature or in the microwave.

recently is the Pulltex AntiOx, which preserves opened wine for up to ten days. At Ambiente, Pulltex told me they will have an AntiOx Champagne Wine Stopper by the summer. Meanwhile, the Sparkling Wine Saver is available as an option for preserving open bottles. The most technical of all the new wine


accessories was the iSommelier ‘smart decanter’ from iFavine. The iSommelier filters 90% purified oxygen through the decanted wine, making the decanting process ‘more efficient, more thorough, and healthier’ (iFavine claims the machine reduces traces of methanol and sulphur dioxide in the wine). An app is available to access wine and winery information plus recommendations from professionals on decanting times.
