news Amazon to ‘lead’ UK cooking & baking market

Amazon is set to top the UK cooking and baking market for the first time in 2019, according to GlobalData. The data and analytics

company’s ‘UK Cooking & Baking 2019-2024’ report forecasts that the online giant’s share of the market will increase to 6.2% in 2019, leaving former leader Sainsbury’s behind with a share of 5.3%. GlobalData retail analyst Amy Higginbotham said: “Amazon has come a long way in the cooking and baking market since 2016, when it had

a share of only 2.7%. Competitive prices and wide range are the two most important drivers of retailer choice for cooking and baking shoppers, according to our survey [of 2,000 respondents]. Amazon has clearly benefitted from this, tempting shoppers away from bricks-and-mortar competitors such as Sainsbury’s with low prices on an unparalleled choice of branded items, along with its attractive fulfilment options.” GlobalData predicts that

over the next five years, the UK cooking and baking market will

Tom Basford rejoins Grunwerg…

Tom Basford has rejoined housewares supplier Grunwerg as sales manager. A well-

known figure in the housewares industry, Tom started his sales career working for Dixons many years ago and then moved to field sales with Brabantia. Two years later, he joined Grunwerg and completed nearly 15 years of service before deciding last year that

it was time for a change and went to work for Meyer Group. Tom commented: “Having

spent just a year away, I was able to gain experience of how a manufacturer in our industry operates This was a real eye opener for me and I hope that I can bring some of the good from Meyer back to Grunwerg, where I am looking forward to continuing my career in sales.” Grunwerg director Ben

Grunwerg said: “Tom brings back to us a wealth of industry experience, and I’m

very pleased that he has decided to rejoin.” Grunwerg specialises in

premium stainless steel products and supplies cutlery, teaware, serving ware, tableware, kitchen utensils, cookware, kitchen knives, barware, and scissors. The company has more than 70 years of experience developing brands including Global, Tojiro Senkou, Rockingham Forge, Bellux, Art Deco, Cafe Stal, Cafe Ole, Minosharp, Pioneer, DrinkPod, Benriner and Vektra.

… As the company moves headquarters

Grunwerg is moving from its Sheffield base at Silversteel House on Rockingham Street, where it has been since 1984, to offices in the valley of Sheepbridge in Chesterfield. The housewares supplier said the new premises ‘feature state-of-the art facilities, including a brand new showroom, and offers more scope for expansion with room for growth, ample space and improved staff facilities with recreational areas’. Managing director David

Grunwerg commented: “This is an exciting move for our

company, coinciding with the transfer of our business to the fourth generation of our family through the capable hands of [son] Ben Grunwerg. “We are vacating our city

centre site for this beautiful new location in the suburbs of Sheffield and Chesterfield, where we hope that our staff will enjoy the pleasant surroundings - and that the business will continue to prosper into the future”. The move was prompted by the sale of Silversteel House to student housing developer Watkins Jones. Grunwerg is

scheduled to complete its relocation by the end of this summer.

The new address is:

Silversteel Manor, Carrwood Road, Carrwood Industrial Estate, Sheepbridge, Chesterfield, Derbyshire S41 9QB. Office contact details remain unchanged.

Grunwerg’s new HQ in Chesterfield

grow by £131.1 million. ‘Replacement remains the most important purchase driver,’ it said, ‘as consumers need to replace frequently- used and worn out items such as frying pans and saucepans, which have very high penetration rates. But market growth is also supported by the continued popularity of cooking as a relaxing pastime, and television shows such as ‘MasterChef’ and ‘The Great British Bake Off’.”

Housewares distributor EPE International has appointed Clive MJ Barstow as sales director. The company said: ‘Clive brings with him

a wealth of experience from working with market-leading distributors ARCO and BUNZL, and global retailers across multiple sectors in the UK and Europe.’ Clive added: “I’ve joined at a very exciting

time for the business in developing the brands, sales teams and customer experience. I’m looking forward to playing my part in driving sales growth by building long term internal and external partnerships that will benefit our customers and continue EPE on its growth plan.” EPE managing director Noel Pamment and operations & finance director Harry Singh commented: “We are delighted to welcome Clive to EPE and our ever growing, inspiring team.” In addition, EPE

Smidge takes part in beach clean

Housewares brand Smidge took part in a beach clean on June 25 at Sand Bay in Weston-Super-Mare. Smidge partnered with the Marine

Conservation Society for the initiative and the Bristol-based business decided to close for the day to enable more than 50 staff members to participate in the activity, which it described as ‘truly important to the brand ethos of Smidge; protecting the environment’. On the day, beach clean specialists from the Marine Conservation Society provided educational insight on the environmental impact of single-use plastic. Smidge team members then picked up and counted the number of plastic items they collected. Sabah Shafi, marketing communications

at Smidge, said: “As a brand, we are committed to doing our bit in trying to reduce single-use plastic, hence why we create with innovation a range of product lines - all of which are reusable.”
