our reliance on imported gas from Russia or elsewhere.” The parliamentary Climate Change Committee (CCC) is also
calling for radical policy and taxation steps amid concerns that the economic and energy security situation could derail progress towards net zero. In its latest report, the Committee said there were still “shocking” policy gaps and “scant evidence of delivery” since the government produced its Net Zero Strategy last year. It praised the intent of the strategy, but said it would not deliver net zero at the current rate of progress. The government’s intention is to achieve a 78% reduction in
carbon emissions by 2035 compared to 1990 levels as a fi rst stage on the way to a net zero economy by 2050. However, the CCC reported that the UK was only on track in eight out of 50 of its key net zero indicators. Attractive This picture could change, however, according to BESA President Rab Fletcher who believes the energy crisis could encourage more businesses and consumers to invest in building improvements. “For many years, BESA members tried to persuade their clients to spend more on energy effi ciency. The problem was that energy was relatively cheap, so it was a low priority. The payback period was too long,” he said. “Now energy bills are a major worry for everyone and central to
the cost-of-living crisis. While politicians are looking for quick fi xes and short-term sticking plasters, our industry can be central to eff orts to put this right for the long-term.” He said a fully funded national programme of building retrofi ts should go much further than just fi tting better insulation and should also take advantage of all the “engineering tools at our disposal” to make buildings perform better, including the latest heating and cooling technologies, better designed building envelopes, and the most up to date control systems. “Now the fi nancial formula has changed, and a proper national
programme of building upgrades is the best way to reduce energy demand and cut bills. It is also the best and most cost-eff ective way to reduce carbon emissions from the built environment in line with net zero targets,” said Fletcher. To remind the sector of its important contribution to Net Zero and
the urgency of the task in hand, BESA’s Net Zero Initiative award will be presented as part of its National Conference and Awards event in London on October 20th. The BESA Awards are dedicated to celebrating and rewarding the industry’s apprentices as well as recognising companies and individuals who have made a positive impact on the built environment through their dedication, contribution, and hard work. The Net Zero award will be presented alongside eight other new
categories and the Association’s long-standing apprentice awards during a special dinner in London hosted by comedian Zoe Lyons following this year’s National Conference at the same venue – the Novotel London West. For more information about this year’s BESA National Conference and Awards go to:

ecoming a certifi ed heat pump installer can seem like a daunting challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. As an industry-led quality assurance scheme,
MCS demonstrates the quality and reliability of products and installers, providing your customers with confi dence and allowing them to access government grants. A great way to start your MCS journey is through the
NIBE Pro installer partnership scheme. It is a streamlined, personalised route for plumbing and heating installers to become an MCS Certifi ed heat pump installer, steering you through the MCS certifi cation process and recognised training courses from start to fi nish. We provide best-in-class digital tools, technical support and business support to help you demonstrate compliance with MCS standards including the quality management system (QMS). Being part of NIBE Pro Installer scheme means you can get qualifi ed via the Heat Pump Association endorsed LCL Awards Level 3 Award in Heat Pump Installation and LCL/ CIPHE Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems qualifi cation. The MCS approved courses are delivered by NIBE’s own expert engineers at our LCL awards approved training centre. In your fi rst year as a NIBE Pro installer, you also will benefi t from membership with both NAPIT, an MCS certifi cation body, and RECC, a consumer code organisation, as well as gaining MCS credits towards registering your fi rst installations.
The QMS is an important part of the MCS auditing process. Installers need to demonstrate a few procedures, these include training records, health and safety policies, and a process to confi rm all work is inspected by a competent person. A critical element of becoming certifi ed is completing a heat pump installation, and ensuring the design is in line with MCS standards. The great news is that all NIBE products are MCS certifi ed. Once your installation is complete, you’ll also need to make sure that the crucial handover documents are complete and passed over to the customer. MCS provide a handy checklist and we’re always around to answer any questions. NIBE Pro partner NAPIT will then undertake an MCS audit. This will last one
day with an offi ce visit in the morning to confi rm your QMS is in order and an afternoon site visit to inspect the install. You will be provided with feedback from your MCS inspector which will confi rm the outcome of the audit. Any non-conformities will be clearly explained, and you will have six weeks to
remedy any issues. We will be on hand to help you overcome any challenges and once these are addressed you will become an MCS Certifi ed installer. As the industry is ever evolving, being MCS certifi ed will keep you updated with best industry practice and ensures you are continually improving your approach. It is important that the processes and procedures put into place for your fi rst audit are used consistently to improve effi ciencies, especially as these will form a large part of your annual MCS audit in future years. Did you know that NIBE Pro training costs are fully redeemable through the
NIBE Pro voucher scheme? You can recover the costs of the industry-recognised qualifi cation by purchasing NIBE products once you’ve completed the training. As well as guiding installers through the MCS certifi cation journey, NIBE
Pro unlocks a world of tools and benefi ts for future years. It is your one stop shop! Find out more about NIBE Pro
