Queen Victoria School (QVS) in Dunblane has refurbished its ageing heating system with the installation of four new Remeha Gas 220 Ace boilers using a Remeha offsite fabricated cascade arrangement.
The age and nature of the building fabric
presented a number of challenges, as did the need to maintain round-the-clock heating and hot water services during the works. “As the project was scheduled to be carried out during term time, temporary boiler plant had to be used to keep the heat on,” Euan Findlay, principal engineer at engineering consultancy Cundall commented.
Euan specified installing four Remeha Gas 220 Ace 250 floor standing boilers with an offsite fabricated cascade arrangement, including a plate heat exchanger, to meet all the requirements in the main school building and Wavel Teaching Block. “The nature of the building meant that floor-
standing boilers were required to meet the high heat demand,” he explained. “We selected the Gas 220 Ace boilers for their high efficiencies and reliability and also for the Remeha offsite cascade options. All the ancillary equipment comes prefabricated and the controls are more straightforward, making specification much easier and giving greater assurance of the end result.” Working with Cundall, Remeha prepared
3D drawings of a boiler cascade arrangement designed bespoke to the specified layout and integrated specially sized pump sets and a Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) into the design. These detailed drawings provided Cundall and the School with early visualisation of the layout. Once the design was clearly identified, production took place in a factory environment, with comprehensive end-of-line testing. Remeha’s turnkey heating solutions can be supplied as a single unit. However, at QVS the requirement was to supply the equipment in
kit form for assembly on site by the project contractor FES Group. Gary Bickerton, project manager at FES Group,
was impressed with the ease of installation of the bespoke offsite solution. “The units arrived in clearly numbered pallets
with a reference drawing for guidance,” he said. “Unloading the pallets and bolting the components together was straightforward and took no time at all for the operatives on site to complete. Having the pipework prefabricated definitely saved us a significant amount of time on site and meant that our operatives could concentrate on the secondary pipework installation. The installation is spot on.” he added.
