UK SHOULD BE BETTER EQUIPPED FOR HEATWAVES
A
building solutions specialist has call for both old and new UK building stock to become more resilient to high temperatures, following record-breaking
temperatures this summer. On 19 July, temperatures in excess of 40°C were
recorded across the UK, with as many as 46 weather stations exceeding the previous record of 38.7°C. Recent research from the MET Offi ce indicates that climate change is causing heatwaves to be more frequent, intense and long-lasting in the UK. However, a report from the Climate Change Committee highlights that more than 570,000 properties have been constructed since 2016 that are not fi t for high temperatures, with another 1.5m set to be built in the next fi ve years. With this in mind, REHAU is highlighting the need to adopt more innovative strategies to help better equip new and existing building stock for increasing occurrences of extreme weather. Franz Huelle, head of technical at REHAU Building Solutions, said: “As we all can attest, the high temperatures recently observed in July made for an uncomfortable living and working environment. However, with all research pointing towards extreme weather events becoming more
frequent, we need to ensure that we are equipped to deal with such temperatures. “There are a number of approaches we can take to help
keep building stock cool. The installation of air source heat pumps, wind catchers and smart control systems, for instance, can all help keep internal temperatures in check. Here, it’s crucial that temperature management is factored in early in the design stage for new buildings.” Mr Huelle said: “Smart control systems off er an
eff ective means for old and new buildings to regulate their temperature during both summer and winter. An all-encompassing solution will be crucial to enabling UK building stock to eff ectively manage the demands of increasingly hot weather.”

VAILLANT TEAM UPBEAT ABOUT FUTURE OF HYDROGEN
ne of Vaillant’s fi rst certifi cated 100% hydrogen boilers is now in place at the H21 test site in South Bank, Middlesbrough, where signifi cant work is
being done to prepare for a mass rollout of hydrogen boilers.
The H21 South Bank project, led by Northern Gas Networks with support from DNV, is carrying out research to assess the suitability of the UK’s existing gas network – with a view to eventually transforming this it to 100% hydrogen. The site is key to helping the UK move towards the reality of using hydrogen as a fuel in our homes. Mark Wilkins, technologies and training director at
Vaillant comments: “Vaillant has carried out a great deal of work testing the appliance in a lab, so this is a chance to get the boiler into the fi eld and use it in the real world. Our installation will start to inform the project on fi ndings such as controlling fl ammability and installation requirements, ahead of hydrogen boilers being produced on a mass scale.
“This trial will also provide validation of the various
steps required between installation and commissioning of the appliance and will start to inform the next stages of fi eld trials as we move from a single house to a village, to a full town. Getting us even closer to a hydrogen reality.” “We are very proud to be part of the fi eld trial here at Middlesbrough as it is a ground-breaking project in terms of the decarbonisation of the UK’s energy grid.” adds Paul Honeyman, head of product development for Vaillant. “This is the start of a new generation of energy products in the UK, and we are delighted to have a boiler running effi ciently on 100% hydrogen. The boiler itself is a result of many years of development and predevelopment work by our teams in Remscheid, Germany. This has involved multiple teams working on each separate element of the boiler, resulting in a high-quality product that will help pave the way for our Net Zero future. I’m delighted that this hard work and expertise has paid off , and we are now able to install and commission a 100% hydrogen boiler for the fi rst time.”
