Air handling units: case study

Air quality soars at Bristol Airport

Ciat UK has supplied four high specification, large capacity air handling units (AHUs) for Bristol Airport’s upgraded West Terminal

of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. The units are equipped with a high efficiency heat recovery system to

capture energy from exhaust air and return it to the building, saving running costs and reducing carbon emissions. Internal AHU components are treated with an impermeable coating to resist corrosion. Key components such as through-wall unions, safety latches, handles, inspection windows and seals, have been developed and designed in-house. Adam Hardacre, sales manager at Ciat UK, said: “The original units at the site

were made by Ciat, and had performed impeccably over many years of service. When they came up for replacement as part of the building extension, it was a natural choice to opt for the latest Ciat air handling units.” He added: “The Airtech range is fully modular and provides a number of options in order to meet specific requirements for almost any commercial and industrial application.” Ciat Airtech units are designed in accordance with EN 13053, and meet the

strict requirements of EN 1886 performance standard for thermal bridging, mechanical strength, casing air leakage, filter by-pass leakage, and mechanical safety requirements for fans. All units are Eurovent certified. The extension to the airport’s West Terminal is part of a long-term strategic development program to upgrade the site’s infrastructure and transform the airport experience for passengers. This latest phase provides a more spacious security search and arrivals

area to reduce waiting times and further raise customer service standards. The air handling units were supplied by Ciat approved reseller, Air

Systems SW. The installation project was undertaken by mechanical services contractor Whitehead Building Services. Consultants were Amber Management, acting for the client, and McCann and Partners, who supported the mechanical services contractor. This latest Ciat contribution to the project follows the successful installation of four Ciat heat pumps and an air handling unit at the airport’s East Terminal. Following a 14-month construction project, the new 9,000m2 West Terminal is now fully operational.
