Adveco & LDM Deliver Low- Carbon, Resilient Water

hybrid system that leveraged both air source heat pumps and electric boilers from Adveco has been installed at installed a 96-room accommodation development at the University of Bath. Working in conjunction with Adveco’s design team, LDM Building Services adjusted the design proposal to fit what was a very small plantroom space allocated for the DHW system. LDM made use of the architecture, which created a first floor overhang providing ground floor space suitable for the location of an Adveco L70 ASPH designed to provide high temperature hybrid domestic hot water (DHW). The L70 is perfect for larger scale commercial applications such as student residences. Using an ASHP to generate preheat for the building’s water greater storage, necessitates the use of larger water storage to avoid system undersizing that fails to meet daily demands. Given the limited plant room space, Adveco helped specify a compact system option consisting of a MSS1000 cylinder acting as a system buffer for the ASHP and a high-grade a stainless steel SSB1000 storage buffer tank used to expand the dump load capacity of the water heating installation.
A MB0050 Plate Heat Exchanger and pump kit, connected the preheat with the top-up heating. A GLC 750 glass lined indirect tank that supports working temperatures of up to 85°C and 10 bar system pressure was paired with a compact wall-hung ARDENT S36 electric boiler creating an indirect water heater. The ARDENT provides additional, sustainable electric system top-up year round.

Exi-tite develops heat pump packaged system for potable hot water

VAC equipment supplier Exi-tite has developed a self-contained potable hot water system using the latest heat pump technology with AI capabilities. The packaged system can be installed as a permanent fixture or mobile ‘plug-in’ solution across various applications such as offices, hotels and student accommodation, with heating capacities ranging between 13kW and 240kW and low-GWP refrigerant options.
Prefabricated off-site, the system is designed to save time, avoid logistical complications, and reduce
installation problems that occur with typical on-site works. It is constructed on a structural framework and designed to be wheeled or crane lifted into position. Andrew Robinson, Managing Director of Exi-tite, said: “Heat pumps are being used increasingly for space heating and potable hot water, but the feedback from consultants and M&E contractors has been that when installed incorrectly, they became an expensive problem. We have managed to navigate around the majority of on-site issues and found a solution that provides peace of mind. ”
LG VRF heat pumps provide modular capacity control and redundancy, and are inverter-driven with both latent and sensible load monitoring. Each Multi V i system is connected to a high-temperature hydro kit, capable of producing water temperatures up to 80°C and provide 100% heating capacity down to -7°C, reducing the increase in capital costs associated with oversizing equipment to accommodate typical losses.

Launch of CPD on building services insulation standard

OCKWOOL, the stone wool insulation manufacturer, has launched an ‘Introduction to BS 5422’, a new CPD module to support specifiers and engineers with advice on how to plan and implement the insulation of building services systems following a recent update to the standard. BS 5422 provides a method for specifying thermal insulating materials needed on pipes, tanks, vessels, ductwork and equipment for certain defined applications and conditions within the temperature range – 40°C to +700°C in domestic, non-domestic and commercial buildings. The standard works as guidance for consultants, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of thermal insulation in the building services sector. It supports Approved Document L as the reference point to determine the minimum thickness of insulation required to limit heat losses and gains from building services.
ROCKWOOL’s new CPD module explores the factors that need to be considered when deciding on the insulation of building services systems according to BS 5422. It also demonstrates how the standard aims to improve the living and working environment of the building as well as make it safer and more energy efficient.
