TRAINING SUPPLEMENT
Boost your business and boost the sector
Apprenticeships are a great option for employers looking to drive their business forward aff ordably in 2024, injecting fresh skills and perspective while making the most of opportunities for funded training. Mark Krull from Logic4training explores the benefi ts of this tried and tested model and sets out the options for businesses, large and small
I
f you are thinking about how to upskill your business in 2024, investing in an apprenticeship should be high up on your list. Many people still associate apprenticeships with school leavers at the beginning of their career – and this is still highly valuable, particularly for sectors that desperately need to recruit new talent, like our own – but the system is much more fl exible now with options for older learners, off ering more sustainable, low-risk pathways for business development. Apprenticeships are a mutually benefi cial
agreement: apprentices ‘earn while they learn’ and employers can take advantage of funded training and aff ordable upskilling, with wages that rise in- line with experience. Depending on the provider you choose, delivery can be tailored to suit the needs of your business.
The traditional day a week model and term-time structure is not an essential of an apprenticeship. Year-round provision and block-release in-class training often suits a business better, allowing employers to better manage workfl ows and get the most out of their new recruit/s.
Funded training
Large businesses are already paying for apprenticeship training, so it makes sense to use it! The Apprenticeship Levy was introduced in 2017, requiring businesses with an annual wage bill of more than £3 million to pay 0.5% as a tax (a minimum of £15,000 a year) that can be reinvested into the workforce to fund apprenticeship training. Smaller businesses pay just 5% towards the
cost of training and may be able to apply for an apprenticeship levy donation from an organisation that cannot use the levy within its own workforce. Apprentices must be paid the minimum wage, but at the end of the process, you have someone fully qualifi ed, well-versed and embedded in the culture of your organisation.
By the industry, for the industry
“According to government statistics, 86% of employers agree that apprenticeships helped them develop new skills to further their organisation, but apprenticeships bring a host of other benefi ts too. Investing in the development of your workforce boosts employee motivation and improves retention, keeping valuable skills within your business.”

Whether you choose to recruit or retrain, the apprenticeship model can help to fi ll key skills gaps in your business with high quality, industry- designed training. Specialist training centres off er a number of benefi ts over college-based programmes. Apprenticeships that are designed by those with industry experience, those who understand the demands of running a business in the building services sector, and can off er fl exibility in terms of course content, delivery and support, will provide the best value. Our apprenticeships, which we’re launching later
this year, will benefi t from small class sizes and state-of-the-facilities to ensure the best possible experience, with the opportunity to tailor course content to suit specifi c needs. We’ll be championing
the afore mentioned block training model (1-2 weeks at a time), as we feel it returns apprentices to the workplace with a better grasp on new skills and therefore more useful to their employer. This approach is also less-disruptive than day-release.
Develop your workforce
According to government statistics, 86% of employers agree that apprenticeships helped them develop new skills to further their organisation, but apprenticeships bring a host of other benefi ts too. Investing in the development of your workforce boosts employee motivation and improves retention, keeping valuable skills within your business. Statistically, apprentices are far more likely to stay with an employer after training is complete. Those with relevant experience may be able to
complete their apprenticeship more quickly or study at a higher level, something that can be discussed with your training centre and tailored to align with business goals. It’s all about seeing the potential in people, listening to their career aspirations and developing their talents and interests. If someone has the passion and drive to learn something new, they could progress into a diff erent role, improve quality of service or create a new arm of the business. Nurturing talent – from new entrants and career
changers to experienced engineers training for new technologies – is critical to the future of the building services industry. We face an unprecedented challenge as we move towards the Net Zero deadline of 2050; to succeed we need a multi-skilled workforce committed to continuous professional development. Designed and delivered by industry experts, training
centre apprenticeships play a key role in facilitating this – the funding is there, why not take the opportunity to expand your workforce in 2024? Logic4training is looking for employers interested in taking on an apprentice. Apprenticeships in Gas Engineering and Smart Metering for candidates aged 19 and over will be delivered from its Northolt and Luton centres from summer 2024
