Fromthe editor A year of

From the editor highlights A

s this is the final issue of the year, it’s worth looking back at some of 2018’s highlights, of which there have been many. I’ve picked out a few of these below.

This was the year of…

• Boiler Plus, introduced in April with the aim of improving energy efficiency by mandating requirements for heating systems in the home;

• London’s Cleaner Heat Cashback scheme launched by Mayor Sadiq Khan to help small businesses save money on their energy bills, as well as help improve the capital’s air quality. • The updated BB101: IAQ has been on everyone’s lips and one piece of government guidance welcomed by industry was the updated BB101 (2018) with guidelines on ventilation, thermal comf ort and indoor air quality in schools.

• ICOM’sWater Quality Consideration of Domestic HotWater Systems for Commercial Application is another notable piece of guidance which came into being aimed at ensuring domestic hot w ater in systems is clean and safe to use. • The A ldous Bill: This was the year when the late payment scandal reached its crescendo following the collapse of Carillion. The Aldous Bill was launched to target abuse associated with cash retentions in construction.

• Here at HVR, the ninth HVR Awards were a huge success with mor e entries than ever before, while we also had another successful HVAC&R Show at ExCeL and crowned another winner in the SkillFRIDGE competition.

This is just a small sliver of the HVAC action over past year and we look forward to more of the same in 2019. Politically it may will be a defining year for our country and here at HVR we hope that regardless of how things play out, it will be a prosperous one f or all of our friends and reader s.

special effects to the film industry. The boilers, which were shipped from CFB Boilers’ manufacturing facility in Essex to the film set in Hungary, are being used to heat water in large tankswhere actors play out aqua-based scenes. They have been used in a number of major Hollywood blockbusters, including the 6th instalment of a science-fiction film about a cyborg assassin from the future, which is due for release in autumn 2019. Scenes filmed in water create a special challenge for Multifilm SFX. For seascapes, large water tanks are used to capture the essence of being in open water, and often feature wavemachines. For health and safety reasons, the water has to bemaintained at a reasonable temperature for the actors.

Having previously purchased a steam boiler from CFB Boilers, which the company uses to cr eate effects such as railway station sc enes or steam rising from the New York metr o, Multifilm SFX turned back to CFB. Gábor Kiszelly,MultifilmSFX’s special effects supervisor, said: “The steam boiler has performed exceptionally well so I decided go back to CFB , despite the logistical challenge of transporting such a large unit between the UK and our location in Hungary.”

The company selected a 1,000 kW high-efficiency hot water boiler to be supplied in a containerised plant room. The boiler and ancillaries weremounted on a steel chequer floor plate to provide a complete solution; only external connections were required before it was ready to use. CFB Boilers also took complete care of the plant room’s transportation, ensuring it reached Hungary safely and swiftly.

When Mul tifilm SFX recentl y decided it needed another heating unit, the compan y ordered an almost identical, second containerised boiler from CFB Boilers. The containerised boilers from CFB Boilers have already been put to use on a number of big-budget productions currently being filmed.
