Hamworthy Heating has launched the upgraded version of its customer favourite for refurbishments, the ErP-compliant Purewell Variheat cast iron condensing boiler. The Purewell Variheat mk2 features the advanced Siemens LMS controls platform, already used in all condensing, pre mix Hamworthy boilers. It allows easy
cascade options controlling multiple boilers and hot water at the same time, providing energy-saving benefi ts and allowing fl exible control regimes for an extended product lifespan. The new version is now also equipped with full spark ignition, updated from the previous hot surface ignitor. The core of the Purewell Variheat mk2 remains the same: a proven cast iron heat exchanger with large waterways especially tolerant of older heating systems. A 6 bar pressure rating makes the boiler suitable for high rise buildings.

ALPHA
A nursing home in Falkirk has received a major effi ciency boost from two new boilers from Alpha Heating Innovation that combine domestic and commercial technology. The boiler in the main nursing home had to be wall hung to create more space, so a ProTec Plus 115kw system boiler was chosen. It off ers a condensing central heating output of 121.7kW, and has a seasonal effi ciency of 96.4%. Features include a stainless-steel
heat exchanger and fully modulating built-in circulator pump, plus frost protection, weather compensation compatibility and a back-lit LCD interface. In the laundry room, a combi boiler was required for heating and hot water; a 33kW E-Tec boiler from Alpha was selected. The E-Tec 33 comes with a stainless-steel heat exchanger, as well as a high-effi ciency Grundfos pump with hydroblock assembly.

SWEGON
Swegon UK&I has responded to demand for more fl exible operation and testing of fi re and smoke dampers by signifi cantly upgrading its controls packages. Actionair, which is part of Swegon, has updated its widely used Actionpac system. The Actionpac LNS5 intelligent addressable life safety damper system is a fl exible and sophisticated package designed specifi cally for the control of smoke and fi re dampers. A dedicated panel is able to monitor damper end switches and does not make the assumption that, simply because power has been removed, the dampers have reached a failsafe position. LNS5 employs a solid-state embedded computer for reliability and is simple to use and install. It is based around a two-core network cable that communicates with the local interfaces at each damper. This signifi cantly reduces wiring costs compared to more conventional hard-wired solutions. The LNS5 is designed to work on interoperable open protocol platforms and can also be linked to the building management system (BMS) via RS485 or BACnet.

After a site survey at Dudley Community Fire Station, it was concluded that the existing LPHW and HWS plant needed replacing with more effi cient equipment. Davies Partnership collaborated with West Midlands Fire to select Mikrofi ll equipment. This included three 110kW stainless steel condensing boilers providing heating and indirect LPHW to two 500L Extreme HWS
loading systems. The Extreme is a domestic hot water generator that combines the advantages of an instantaneous hot water heater and a storage system. The effi ciency of the Ethos 110kW boilers is maximised whilst providing indirect LPHW to the cylinder as the Extreme is designed to operate at a ∆t of 30°C. Based on a prioritised input of 110kW at 80°C, each Extreme 500 will produce in excess of 2350 l/hr and 800 litres in a 10 minute period at 60°C.

VIESSMANN
Viessmann has introduced the Vitocrossal 200, an 800-1000kW gas condensing boiler with an innovative MatriX pre-mix disc burner which sets new standards for commercial boilers. The Vitocrossal 200’s numerous improvements over its predecessor include an extended modulation range of 1:6 for greater effi ciency at partial load and low NOx
emissions of less than 40mg/kWh, a modular design for easier installation, and signifi cantly smaller dimensions which make it perfectly-suited to smaller plant rooms. For heating larger premises, there is a cascade function for up to eight boilers with a total output of 8,000kW. The Vitocrossal 200’s footprint is 27% more compact than that of a boiler with a conventional burner and Viessmann has been able to shorten the unit by 1m.

NAADUK
Ventilation cleaning industry experts from the National Association of Air Duct
Specialists UK (NAADUK) were invited to Eurovent Association member Jasun Envirocare’s factory to hold one of their regular membership meetings and learn about the latest in fi ltration standards. Jasun Envirocare hosted NAADUK’s regional meeting at its Bridgwater factory, and held a seminar on fi ltration standards and types of fi lters to suit diff ering building uses and applications.
NAADUK members were given a presentation by Colin Hitch, the technical director for ISO16890 Air Filters for General Ventilation, a global international standard. The members learnt about air fi lters classifi cation and energy performance. There was great focus on PI particle size and how damaging particles can be to the human body, causing cancer and heart problems. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a subject that NAADUK is championing, aware of the need to educate not only the occupiers of a building but also building owners on improving IAQ.
