Slitting & Rewinding

Hitting the energy crisis head on with new energy efficient finishing equipment

By Annemarie Rhodes, managing director of Bar Graphic Machinery.

A

s Russia seeks to turn off the tap of Europe’s gas supply, and the war in Ukraine continues to rumble on, a worrisome future is ahead for the continent, but the energy crisis is now truly global. For months, rocketing natural gas and oil prices have been causing havoc around the world and it seems there is no end in sight. From fuel shortages and blackouts in the developing nations to threats of blackouts in Europe this coming Winter, the ripple effects are being seen globally as markets were already constricted due to the impact of the pandemic, supply chain slowdowns and climate shocks.

The label and packaging converting industries have experienced their fair share of all this turmoil with various product shortages and escalating inflation but more worrying now is the impact of the energy crisis and resulting inflation on the sector. At Bar Graphic Machinery (‘BGM’), we recognize that our industry needs to become more sustainable. Not just in terms of the materials we use to produce packaging and labels, but in the processes and equipment that deliver products at speed. This means

developing new less energy-intensive processes and technologies that can take the sting out situations like today and deliver a more sustainable future for all.

Responding to this need, which now seems more important than ever, the team at BGM has been concentrating on designing and delivering new energy efficient finishing machines that can help our customers reduce their energy bills.

A good example of this is our latest BGM Elite iSR label inspection slitter rewinder that simply runs on a simple single phase 230-volt plug. Offering superb energy efficiency to lower overall converting costs, this high spec solution offers a wide range of features more commonly found on more expensive slitting machines.

Utilising an integrated support attachment on the rewind, the Elite iSR can run 0.5-inch cores – unachievable by almost all other manufacturers – to boost capacity and throughput.

For consistency, it incorporates an electronic torque-controlled rewind system with variable tension control to eliminate tensioning problems (typical of old-fashioned

mechanical clutches) and automatic roll compensation unwind braking saves time for operators in not having to alter the settings once the job is running.

Again reducing costs and boosting sustainability performance, the Elite iSR offers capability to manually adjust the roll end value with its intuitive full color HMI touch screen, enabling roll end wastage as little as 3.9ft. Following the cost efficiency theme, BGM has also developed the BGM Ecoflex specifically designed as an economical solution for multipurpose, multiple substrate inspection slitting and rewinding. The BGM Ecoflex can finish a wide range of unsupported and supported films, foils, label stocks, papers, and light boards from substrate thicknesses of 11 microns and upwards with a dynamic performance at speeds of up to 984ft/min. It can also be fitted with a large 3.3ft (1 metre) capacity unwind and integral roll lift, maximizing changeover efficiency and accommodates a wide variety of automatic web inspection control systems to ensure minimal waste from quality errors. Primarily designed for flexible packaging, film, and label applications, the Ecoflex modular design can be reconfigured for a variety of specialist finishing applications, such as booklets, ticket & tags, wrap & colour chip labels.

Finally, the BGM Elite Multiflex multiple substrate inspection slitter rewinder is a multipurpose multiple substrate inspection rewinder that can finish a broad range of unsupported and supported substrates with thicknesses 11 microns and upwards, with a dynamic performance of up to 984ft/min. This machine accommodates a wide variety of automatic web inspection control systems with fully automated workflow systems from press to rewinder and removal of waste while still inspecting the web are also achievable. The team at BGM is committed to finishing excellence but most importantly today, it is seeking ways to drive energy efficiency and cost down for its customers.
