Flexible Packaging Alkali-resistant ink W
e at Resino Inks experience that several customers find it challenging to meet the consumers’ demands regarding sustainable solutions. Recently, we were contacted by a customer facing challenges related to polypropylene zip lock bags which can be used for storing food content.
Consumers want to reuse their polypropylene zip lock bags by washing it in the dishwasher. In this way, there is no need for the consumers to throw out the polypropylene zip lock bags after usage. However, our customer was not able to fully meet these demands from the consumers, as the print on the polypropylene zip lock bag is partly or completely washed off in the dishwasher. When ordinary printing ink is in contact with alkaline soap the ink will be dissolved.
TWO-COMPONENT WATER-BASED INK To find a solution to this challenge, we tested several ink solutions. We aimed to develop a high-quality ink that can withstand being washed five times in the dishwasher at 60 degrees with alkaline soap while the ink remains its colours.
These features are demanding as the ink needs to be alkali resistant because tabs for dishwashing are highly alkaline. At the same time, the ink needs to be resistant to hot water since the water in the dishwater is typically 60 degrees.
As a solution, we developed a two- component water-based ink that we originally
developed for polyamide meat casings. The ink is alkali resistant and resistant to hot water, and the ink fulfils all requirements for adhesion and printability. With our two- component
water-based ink, the customer can offer
polypropylene zip lock bags where the ink remains after being washed in the dishwasher up to five times.
This situation illustrates
Resino’s approach
to the challenges our customers meet. We search in our archives for similar solutions and then we further develop a solution solving the current challenge. In this case, we found a solution that we already use for polyamide meat casings.
