ALTANA acquires closure materials business from Henkel

ALTANA has acquired Henkel’s closure materials business for an undisclosed sum. As a result, the specialty chemicals group is strengthening its range of PVC-free solutions for the packaging industry in particular. Within the ALTANA Group, the business will be integrated into the ACTEGA division and globally assigned to the Metal Packaging Solutions business line. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. ALTANA AG CEO Martin Babilas said of the deal: “With the acquisition of Henkel’s closure materials business, we are continuing to systematically implement our acquisition strategy and our focus on innovative specialty chemicals.” The acquisition essentially involves the takeover of technologies and customer relationships. “We are thus further expanding our business with sealants for the packaging industry,” explained ALTANA’s ACTEGA division head Thorsten Kröller. “The transaction is an ideal addition to our existing product portfolio. With it, we will be able to supply our longstanding and new customers with innovative solutions even better and more flexibly in the future.”

Sealing compounds are used in a wide variety of packaging, such as for food and beverages. They protect the contents from external influences and help to ensure that they have a longer shelf life.

MBO for West Yorkshire filling machinery manufacturer

Advanced Dynamics, a Bradford-based business that manufactures automated filling and packaging machinery, has completed a management buyout (MBO) for an undisclosed sum, supported by a team of Yorkshire advisers.

Established in 2004, the company has developed a range of filling, capping and labelling machinery to support production lines across a variety of sectors. With more than 100 years’ combined experience, Advanced Dynamics has established a reputation as a reliable packaging partner, working closely with customers to provide ongoing technical expertise in addition to supplying machinery. The company has grown to be a £5.5million turnover business, employing 22 people from its Bradford head office and factory. Malcolm Little, formerly managing director of Advanced Dynamics, has sold part of his shareholding in the business to sales director Tom Smith, who takes on the position of managing director. Mr Little moves to the role of executive chairman, working alongside Mr Smith to provide strategic advice, as the business enters its second chapter of growth.

New inkjet solution for printing on secondary packaging

Domino Printing Sciences has launched the new Cx350i, a reliable, low-maintenance piezo inkjet (PIJ) printer, designed for worry-free coding on secondary packaging. The Cx350i is optimised for low-cost printing of high-quality, GS1-compliant machine-readable codes, and is designed to give manufacturers a real alternative to the higher costs and material waste of labelling. “Direct printing on boxes is a great way for manufacturers to reduce complexity, cost, and waste, but a reliable solution has always been missing from the marketplace,” said product manager David Edwards. “There is significant customer demand in this area, and we have sought to develop a solution which removes the pain, rework, and risk, and gives manufacturers a real alternative to labelling.”

Malcolm Little said: “Having worked closely with Tom for more than five years, I am confident that he has the skills and ambition to drive the business forward as we continue to expand our range and move into new markets. He understands Advanced Dynamics and what our customers need, and has played a vital role in enabling us to exceed our target of growing turnover to £3million by 2020. I am looking forward to continuing to work with him in an advisory role as we target turnover growth to £10million over the next five years.” Tom Smith added: “Our second chapter of growth will see us further extending our portfolio of machines in order to provide turnkey solutions in response to customers’ needs for bigger and more extensive production lines. Having previously worked in many of these areas, I am excited to be taking the business into new markets with Malcolm at my side.”
