Industry News 

 Editor’s Note

Welcome to the May edition of Converter. It’s been a pretty wet and miserable month in the UK so far, so I hope we can be a ray of sunshine through the clouds, with a host of

great features and news for you to sit back and enjoy. This issue takes a closer look at the flexible packaging sector, with some great insight into what is driving consumer demand for pouch designs, as well as discussing the environmental benefits of using flexible solutions over rigid packaging for certain products.

We also cover the latest developments, technologies and innovations available in both drying, curing & UV, and inks & ink dispensers. As is so often the case, sustainability is key to innovation across most categories now, and this month’s Sustainable Converting section doesn’t disappoint; addressing why it is now time for the industry to reduce the use of stretch film, as well as showcasing a selection of fantastic new sustainable packaging launches. Even our Coating & Laminating feature gets in on the act, with fantastic eco-friendly advancements.

Forgive my brief and fairly piecemeal summary of this month’s content, as I feel as though I’ve barely touched on half of we have for you to enjoy this month – but I working with limited space here, and I’m confident the articles overleaf speak for themselves.

Having come into the industry as a novice just seven months ago, I am definitely learning fast and I find that each issue teaches me so much more about this vibrant, creative sector. I do hope you feel the same way.

Durham Box creates stand-out giſt pack for Turning Point Brew Co

BOBST secures hat-trick of machine investments from Manor Packaging

Corrugated packaging manufacturer, Manor Packaging, has ordered a new VISIONCUT flat-bed die-cutter and a new EXPERTFOLD multipoint folder- gluer from Bobst UK & Ireland - taking their tally of BOBST machinery to three in less than two years.

Packaging manufacturer, Durham Box, has produced distinctive new gift and shipping packaging for Knaresborough-based craft beer micro brewery, Turning Point Brew Co.

The vibrant selection gift pack, comprising either 4 x 440ml cans, or 4 x 330ml cans, was created to showcase innovative beers from the brewer’s core range, including the iconic Disco King, an Ameri-can pale ale and three popular Custard sweet ales in various unique flavours.

Formed in 2017, Turning Point Brew Co’s founders have seen a rapid expansion of their business, particularly in online sales of their house and special beers. In developing their gift pack concept, the brewery approached Durham Box with a loose idea, which the packaging manufacturer then con-verted into reality with a concept and samples. Basing the artwork on the playful design of the Dis-co King pale ale, the gift box was digitally printed through Durham Box’s Nozomi C18000, onto a clay-coated outer liner to give a vivid eye-catching look. In addition to the gift packs, Durham Box also supply shipping boxes, printed on brown board in one-colour flexo in a shocking pink to ensure stand-out. The boxes use a crash lock base with tuck in top to assist in speeding up packing time on canning lines.

Just 18 months ago, Peterborough-based Manor Packaging, part of the Fencor Packaging Group, didn’t have a BOBST machine on site. However, the company’s experience when purchasing and installing the UK’s first FFG 8.20 Discovery, a next-generation flexo folder-gluer, proved so invaluable for the business that the team didn’t look anywhere else when the need came for a new die-cutter.

The BOBST FFG 8.20 Discovery was installed in February 2020 and chosen for its minimal set-up time of just two minutes, impressive productivity rate and ability to maintain accuracy at high speed. Most recently, a new VISIONCUT 1.6 die-cutter was installed at the end of April and this will be followed by an EXPERTFOLD 165 A2 multipoint folder-gluer, in August. The timing of the installation coincided with a huge uplift in work for Manor Packaging and the FFG 8.20 Discovery has demonstrated strong return on investment in the months since it was installed. Added to this organic increase in volume, driven in part by the move away from plastic packaging, has been the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Fencor Packaging Group managing director David Orr said “We needed additional capacity in order to meet the turnaround times demanded by our customers. We spoke to the BOBST team and... such was the customer experience when we installed the FFG 8.20 Discovery, that we didn’t look anywhere else.”
