Industry News Contact Originators completes multi-million-pound ‘super site’

Following a devastating fire at Contact Originators ‘original premises last January, full scale platemaking is now underway at the firm’s new state-of-the-art 32,000sq ft site in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester. Comprising three high-tech production halls, contemporary office space and studio, alongside another building housing the company’s new still, the new site offers four times the floor space of the previous facility in Bredbury, Stockport, which was devastated by fire in January 2020.

The still, the largest in Europe, used for platemaking, offers an immense distillation capacity of 24,000 litres, triple the volume provided at Bredbury, and has been appropriately named ‘Goliath’ by the Contact team. With two fully inline platemaking lines already in place, and a third set to be installed in Q3, Contact Originators is demonstrating its commitment to innovation, right first-time production quality, process efficiency and sustainability. Contact Originators Group CEO Steve Mulcahy said: “After some fantastic support from industry peers since the fire, we are thrilled to say that, since May, Contact has been 100% in control of platemaking in-house. It has been a tough 18 months, but we have created a fully streamlined, automated facility that meets our vision for what a 21st century pre-press plant should look like. “With a unique, inline equipment configuration we can support super-efficient, sustainable and highly productive operations, 24 hours per day, six days per week, to provide customers and stakeholders with supreme quality, flexibility and fast turnaround plate manufacturing. By utilising the latest technologies, we are enhancing sustainability across the entire site and future-proofing processes too.”

Mr Mulcahy added: “In the design and development of this site, we believe we have created the best-equipped prepress facility in the UK. We are driven by our hunger to do things better; reduce costs/waste, increase quality and boost sustainability.”

C&T Matrix awarded British Standards Institution ISO 9001 and ISO 14001

C&T Channel Matrix (C&T) has announced its accreditation of two British Standards Institution (BSI) certificates.

The first certificate is the ISO 9001 Quality Management System accreditation, for the following scope: ‘the manufacture of extruded and other semi- manufactured products for the paper board and carton industry’. This certificate will result in several positive steps for C&T, including improving efficiency and standing out from our competitors.

Operations manager Phil Hallam

C&T’s other BSI accreditation is the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (ESM). C&T

Matrix managing director Simon Shenton said: “This certificate confirms our commitment to quality and sustainability. Future sustainability is a driving force for C&T, and we continue to strive to meet our objective to reduce manufacturing waste by up to 40% by 2022. This makes our ESM certificate particularly momentous to us, as we take this next exciting step to further improving our environmental performance.”

Global Plastic Supply acquires United Converting Inc

StockPKG, a leading player in both manufacturing and supplying packaging across the globe, has acquired US plastic slitting company, United Converting Inc (UCI). As a supplier of films and substrates, StockPKG seeks to enhance its ability to completely serve its customers throughout the entire manufacturing process and recently realised that United Converting Inc could be a key component in achieving that goal. The acquisition and integration of United Converting Inc was made official on Tuesday, May 18, 2021.

With headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, and a strong national presence in the United States, StockPKG has experienced consistent growth since its inception in 2008. Procuring an experienced, high-quality company, such as UCI, which was once a contracted partner of StockPKG, allows for more control of the overall manufacturing process.

“We are looking forward to joining and growing with the StockPKG family,” said United Converting president John Malaby. “With the knowledge and slitting experience that UCI will bring to StockPKG, and the vast resources that StockPKG has, combined we will be a great resource for the industry.” President and Founder of StockPKG, Sean Rudner, remains equally excited about the union of the two companies; StockPKG plans to aggressively grow their business with a series of similar acquisitions and greenfield expansions. “This is the first of many future manufacturing sites we’re planning to use as an integral growth mechanism for StockPKG.”
