 Editor’s Note

As much as I would love not to have to mention Covid, I think it would be remiss of me to ignore the topic altogether, given what is happening globally, with new variants, healthcare systems overwhelmed, vaccine shortages, and further theories about the origin of the virus. Converter has an internationally-diverse readership and features companies from across the globe, so I know the pandemic will be affecting your business and industry differently right now. Whilst there is little doubt that the pandemic has created opportunities for some within our sector and has even resulted in a surge in demand for certain products and services, such as rotary screen printing, there is definitely a real sense of fatigue, as people long to return to any kind of normal. I have mused over just what this ‘new normal’ will look like. Today, I read that the required wearing of face masks may remain long term in the UK, with home working and travel quarantine also here to stay for the foreseeable future. There may not be a huge amount of surprise at this news and, those who have found a strong footing with remote working, for example, won’t even bat an eyelid. I also see the pandemic has pushed 50% of manufacturers towards initiating digital transformations within their business, which tells me people are doing all they can to prepare themselves as best they can for whatever may come. It has been more than a year of unprecedented challenges but, every month, we are still able to fill our pages with a wealth of exciting innovations and developments, plus news of growth, and companies seizing opportunities, adapting and thriving. I hope that this content, whatever the landscape, serves to help your business do better.

Rotary screen printing records post- Covid surge

Polysack and Flessofab launch novel recyclable packaging in UK

Prepress partner to the label and packaging print sector, Creation Reprographics, has reported a dramatic boost in demand for rotary screen printing in the label and packaging sectors, which the business believes will continue for the foreseeable future.

Creation notes that its rotary screen range is seeing a new lease of life in the label and packaging printing sector. MD Matt Francklow said: “We’re seeing the print and packaging sector put its foot back on the accelerator in terms of innovation and development. The uptick in demand for rotary screens isn’t too surprising. The format has been gathering pace for some time, as printers invest in more diverse print technologies. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for label and packaging printers to specialise when agility, versatility and innovation remain so key. Rotary screen printing is hitting all the right notes for printers in terms of what brand owners and consumers are looking for. “Volume, speed and accuracy are as core as ever, both in getting product into consumer hands and in reducing print errors and re-runs. However, we also see a marked drive towards the premium tactile finishes that resonate so strongly with today’s shoppers.”

Polysack, a green-tech manufacturer of plastic film products for flexible packaging, has partnered with Flessofab, an Italian packaging manufacturer, to launch a series of eco-friendly, stand-up pouch packaging. The Pack’N’Cycle family of films is made of Mono Oriented PE (MOPE) and has enhanced properties compared to traditional PE films. Pack’N’Cycle successfully replaces traditional BOPET or BOPP, thus producing a package made of mono-material that can be fully recycled. By combining suitable raw materials and a unique production process, Polysack has achieved a sustainable solution that it believes will change the flexible packaging market. During the production process, the films are stretched in one direction using Polysack’s proprietary methodology and processes, thus obtaining improvements in several properties: mechanical, optical, gas transmission (barrier) and thermal resistance, all while maintaining a particularly low film thickness of less than 25 microns. Already commercialised for dried fruits, bread crumbs, coffee, and more, the film is suitable for printing in every existing technology and a variety of applications. The packages have successfully launched in the British market and are already in use by a number of leading brands in the country.

“With the Pack’N’Cycle MOPE family of films, we can replace BOPET in 80% of its applications,” said Flessofab R&D director Gianfranco Lambiase. Polysack CEO Yanir Ahanironson added: “The novel MOPE films we design, innovate, and produce have been used in more than 130 projects. Pack’N’Cycle’s MOPE enables converters to produce a mono-material package without sacrificing efficiency or quality. It is a true BOPET replacement.”
