Stora Enso and Pulpex partner to produce fiber-based bottles on industrial scale
Stora Enso and Pulpex have joined forces to industrialise the production of eco-friendly paper bottles and containers made from wood fiber pulp as an alternative to PET plastics and glass. The exclusive partnership leverages Stora Enso’s formed fiber technologies and ability to convert end-products at an industrial scale.
The joint development agreement is formed exclusively between Stora Enso and Pulpex, a sustainable packaging technology company established by Diageo (makers of Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff and Guinness) and venture management company, Pilot Lite. The partnership aims for large-scale industrial production of renewable and recyclable paper bottles and containers that degrade readily in the natural environment. Produced with sustainably sourced formed fiber pulp, the bottles and containers would enable a significantly lower carbon footprint compared with glass or PET. A formed fiber product is manufactured by pressing various wood-based pulps into a three-dimensional shape in a moulding machine. The focus of the partnership now is on developing a high-speed production line which is expected to be operational in 2022.
Pronexos rollers division reports record growth
The Pronexos roller department, which produces carbon fibre rollers for applications in a range of industries, has achieved extraordinary sales growth in 2021, building on its successful performance in a difficult market last year.
The company reports that confirmed orders for this year have now surpassed 2020’s total sales volume, and Pronexos is ramping up production capacity to deliver this sustained increase in demand. Annualised growth in 2020 was more than 40% up on the previous year, with the roller team already on course to at least match this growth rate again in 2021.
Growth has been delivered by winning new business and by developing existing customer accounts. “In 2020 we saw a surge in demand for replacement rollers as customers looked to delay new machinery investments because of COVID in favour of refurbishments,” explained Pronexos sales manager Jorn de Noord. “Now those delayed investments are being implemented, we are also seeing this pent-up demand coming through in orders for rollers for new plant and investments.”

Pronexos was successful in maintaining its production capacity throughout 2020, and output was not hindered by lockdowns or staff absences. This continuity of operation has had a major impact on sales. “We have been able to maintain prices while others in the market have been forced to raise theirs” explained de Noord. “This, along with our growing reputation in the rollers market, has helped us to widen our customer base. We have seen particular interest coming from larger OEMs who are now demonstrating their faith in Pronexos to deliver competitively priced rollers at high quality levels. Our expertise lies in manufacturing rollers from wound carbon fibre that offer great strength-to-weight ratio. We are experts at optimising material usage so we are able to produce fit-for-purpose rollers at competitive costs, with compelling throughput times.”
