Adhesive Applications

How can conditions impact your choice of adhesive?

Comments supplied byCameron Russell, Technical Engineer at Drytac.

hose who regularly work with adhesives will know that it is not quite as simple as peeling the fi lm back, sticking it to a surface and giving yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. There is much more work that goes into any application involving an adhesive, as a mistake early on could cost you in the long run.

T

First and foremost, there is no one-size-fi ts-all solution when it comes to adhesives. Several types are available to customers, and while each has its own qualities, it may not be suitable for the project you are working on. For this reason, it is of huge importance to properly research the product you want to work with before you can even think about applying it to a surface. Drytac off ers many adhesive options, but for simplicity, we’re highlighting the most widely used here. Up fi rst are removable adhesives, which, as their name may suggest, are best suited to short- term applications such as graphics, promotions and seasonal campaigns as they can be easily repositioned and removed. These products off er clean removal without causing damage to the surface or leaving behind residue, making them an ideal choice for use on windows, retail environments and as temporary signage. Next are permanent adhesives, and again the clue is in the name. These materials are designed for use in durable applications thanks

to their long-term bonding strength. Suitable for use in both indoor and outdoor projects, these products also off er dependable adhesion on challenging surfaces where other adhesives may fail.

Also from Drytac is our ReTac range of permanently peelable adhesive products. Repositionable adhesives, these can be installed, removed and reapplied several times, all while maintaining consistent tack – which in turn signifi cantly supports workers during installation. This makes them an eff ective solution for applications including wall decor and displays that require frequent updates.

Drytac also off ers a collection of dot pattern adhesives for easy, dry application. Patented by Drytac, this technology makes installation and repositioning easy for the customer across projects such as window graphics and promotional decals where removability and clean application are priorities.

Next, are cold weather adhesives for both removable and permanent applications. Engineered to perform in low temperatures and unheated conditions, these specially designed solutions are the perfect fi t for applications that require reliable adhesion during winter installation or when being applied in cold climates. For these reasons, cold weather adhesives are a popular choice for work such as outdoor signage, arena barricades and construction graphics.

Finally, you may consider a hot melt adhesive, which are pressure-sensitive adhesive products that are applied in a heated liquid state. The benefi t of working with these solutions is that they off er excellent bond strength and quick tack, making life easier in certain situations such as when working with specialty mounting and industrial graphics applications that require robust adhesion.

While each product type off ers plenty of advantages, it is up to the user, in partnership with a trusted supplier, to determine which is the most suitable for the project they are working on. Consider the type of application, its purpose and where it will be placed and this will help you identify the most eff ective solution.
