Industry News Closing the gender gap in manufacturing

Historically, manufacturing has been seen as male dominated, with few women choosing to follow a career within the industry. Even today, women only make up 26 per cent of the workforce within this sector. Kate Hulley is representative of a small percentage of business

owners with a unique manufacturing business model. As the managing director and owner of Wigan-based cardboard box manufacturing company, Belmont Packaging, she is creating jobs, driving growth and reducing gender inequality within the industry. Business models such as Belmont Packaging

are proving that women are making successful headway in a male dominated industry and what’s more, this suggests how we can expect the industry to look in the future: “More and more women are getting involved,” said Hulley.

Chemicals supply chain launches new guidance for meeting waste packaging obligations

A guidance document, ‘The assessment and classification of waste packaging’, developed by trade associations representing companies that use packaging operating in the chemicals supply chain, has been developed. The Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales and Scottish Environment Protection Agency have welcomed the development of this guidance and have agreed to its adoption in England, Wales and Scotland. The document provides guidance for assessing whether packaging to be

taken offsite is waste or not, and if waste, whether it is waste packaging or not, and whether it should be classified as hazardous or non-hazardous. It includes a method that allows for the weight of the packaging to be taken into account and is intended to be complementary to the joint environment.

Coffee cups saved from landfill come back to life to make Manchester greener

On Saturday July 22, the first recycled products to be made from Manchester’s used coffee cups were put into use in Old Trafford’s Centenary Gardens. Almost 30,000 used coffee cups were collected in bright yellow coffee cup shaped bins on Oxford Road from

October 2016 to February 2017 as part of the ground breaking #1MoreShot initiative led by the environmental charity, Hubbub, in partnership with Manchester City Council, Groundwork MSSTT and recycling company Simply Cups. The cups have now been recycled into bird feeders, plantpot holders and chalk boards by eco product design company, ashortwalk. The first of these were donated to the Love Old Trafford Community Group and the Old Trafford Wonder Women WI as part of Saturday’s Old Trafford Picnic. Every day up to seven million coffee cups are thrown away across the UK, with less than one per cent of these cups thought to be recycled. The tricky issue to date has been the plastic film on the inside of the paper cups, which means that they can rarely be recycled with other mixed recycling. #1MoreShot was the UK’s first initiative to trial new methods to tackle the issue of coffee cup recycling, processing the cups to create a plastic material that is made into new products. The material contains up to 40 per cent paper content. Following the successful trial in Manchester, the scheme was extended to the #SquareMileChallenge in the City

of London in April of this year. Read more on the Converterwebsite

British Coatings Federation wins Trade Association of the Year 2017

The British Coatings Federation (BCF) beat over 300 other trade associations in the UK to be crowned ‘Trade Association of the Year 2017’. This award recognises the continued development of the Federation. The BCF also won ‘Marketing Campaign of the Year’ for its DIY Safe Antifouling Initiative and was highly commended in the ‘Magazine of the Year’ category for the coatings industry magazine, Covered. Linda Cavender, chief executive of the Trade Association Forum, said, “BCF

have had another outstanding year, growing from strength to strength and addressing their members’ needs, undertaking some great lobbying activity and achieving record levels of growth. Their high level of professionalism and great effectiveness as an organisation has meant that this year the judges had no difficulty in declaring BCF the very worthy winner of the TA Best Practice Awards Trade Association of the Year for 2017.”
