The principle of laser cleaning works as follows: a pulsed laser beam is directed at the soiled surface. The very short laser pulses (20ns) are absorbed by the dirt and heat it up. The very intensive heating leads to an evaporation of the contamination. The underlying substrate has a higher evaporation value. As long as the laser beam does not exceed these values, it is possible to selectively evaporate the contamination. Once the contaminated area is removed, the laser beam has no effect on the substrate, as it is mainly reflected by that substrate. Mr de Wit says: “It is important to printers that the rollers transfer enough ink, so that the ink density is sufficiently high. If the roller gets dirty, not only does the volume of ink transferred by the roller decrease, but the surface tension changes as well. When this surface tension is almost the same as the polymer plate, not enough ink is transferred. Laser cleaning brings the surface tension back to the original dyne values. This is the great advantage that only laser cleaning can achieve.”
