Power Roll partners with Japanese energy firm on solar film market development

P

ower Roll, a developer of ultra-low- cost and lightweight flexible solar film has announced a strategic partnership with one of Japan’s leading energy companies.

The partnership sets out a range of research and development activities to establish the market potential and use cases for solar film in Japan.

Flexible and lightweight solar film will expand the market for solar energy, generating new opportunities across a broad range of applications. A successful partnership will see the energy company become a licensee of Power Roll’s technology with the rights to develop, manufacture and sell its solar film in Japan. “This major Japanese energy company is already demonstrating strong leadership in the effort to achieve net zero carbon, and we’re delighted to partner with such an innovative organisation to help them deliver on those goals,” says Power

is 20 times lower. Power Roll’s technology simplifies manufacturing by using high- speed roll-to-roll production processes, which eliminates many costly process steps typical of other solar photovoltaic technologies.

In February, Power Roll revealed that it has raised £5.8m to scale-up solar film manufacture. A total of £3million was secured in the second funding round in the space of six months.

Roll CEO, Neil Spann.

The energy company’s vision embodies a target to expand its renewable power generation, aiming to reach a significant renewable power source transaction volume in Japan and internationally by 2030. Power Roll’s solar film is on track to deliver the lowest cost of electricity for any solar technology, is 25 times lighter than silicon PV and has a carbon footprint that

Equity investors in the latest round include Indigo 7 Ventures (i7v), Kero Development Partners and RAB Capital. Power Roll also converted £1,250,000 loans into equity as part of the Government’s Future Fund scheme, which was launched to support UK firms through the Coronavirus pandemic, enabling the company to continue to break new ground in technology and innovation.

Two Bostik packaging adhesives approved for recycling by Recyclass

B

ostik has obtained the approval by Recyclass that two of its adhesives are compatible with the polyethylene (PE) film recycling stream.

The recyclability approvals delivered by RecyClass concerns the M-Resins technology, a pressure-sensitive adhesive enabling resealable packaging, and Bostik SF10M, a solvent-free polyurethane laminating adhesive. Test results confirmed both technologies to be suitable for recycling in a polyethylene (PE) film stream when used in the right conditions. RecyClass is a comprehensive cross- industry initiative that works to advance plastic packaging recyclability and to establish a harmonised approach towards recycled content calculation and traceability in Europe. As communicated by Recyclass, the results obtained from the testing for approvals of Bostik’s products contribute

to the constructive developments within the Design for Recycling and to improving recycling rates of the PE stream. Bostik’s reseal M-Resins, used in the food packaging industry to produce resealable films and lids, were approved to be compatible and to conform to the current European PE film recycling stream. Bostik’s reseal M-Resins were created to answer consumer demands for convenience and to provide sustainability by offering considerable material source reduction. M-Resins are used in the food packaging industry to produce resealable films and lids. On December 8, Recyclass communicated that M-Resins reclosable technology is compatible and conforms to the current European PE film recycling stream. Bostik market manager seal & reseal EMEA Jean-François Le Cam says: “M-Resins are not just a product, but a real technology...

We are able to offer full peelable easy-open and reclosable solutions for food trays to packaging makers and brands that can be customised and adapted to their needs.” Recyclass announced on December 15 that the solvent-free laminating adhesive “Bostik SF10M” is fully compatible with PE flexibles recycling. Bostik market manager lamination EMEA, Cyrille Billouard says: “We know how important it is for our customers, packaging producers and brands to develop products and back their sustainability claims by scientific data. “We have started offering solutions thoroughly tested and approved by highly-recognised industry players under exhaustive testing protocols as the one from Recyclass. We achieved one important step for the future of Bostik laminating adhesive towards truly recyclable multi-layer packaging.”
