Roland VersaUV LEC2-640 gives The Vinyl Guys cutting-edge capabilities

he Vinyl Guys owner, Alex Liggett was the first individual in the UK to buy Roland’s newly-launched VersaUV LEC2-640 cutter/printer. The Stourbridge- based business, which specialises in labels, vehicle branding, signs and graphics, and custom print workwear, purchased the equipment in September and has used it almost every day since. Mr Liggett explains how the equipment has helped to transform his business:

T

“Before I purchased Roland’s VersaUV LEC2-640 printer/cutter, I saw UV printing as something specialist, rather than day-to- day. I was also concerned that it might be a steep learning curve to adapt to the new technology but, within 20 minutes, I was able to get to grips with the new features and start printing premium quality labels. Branching into UV has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for the business! “The print quality of UV is just superb. If we need to print intricate detail or small text, we

go straight to UV. Customers who purchase our stickers tell us that they instantly notice the premium quality finish, the solidity of the colours and small-scale detail. The ability to print clear ink and create outstanding gloss effects has made us stand out on social media and introduced us to customers who otherwise would have gone elsewhere. Once they’ve noticed us for our stickers, they typically come back for other items like signage and vehicle graphics. “Using the ECO-UV EUV5 inks with the LEC2-640, we are able to produce labels

that are dry as soon as they come off the machine, allowing us to finish and pack them straight away compared to our other Roland solvent machines... From a workflow point of view, this saves us around three to four hours in outgassing time, which makes a huge difference. We can now ship on the same day for next-day delivery; something that is not always possible with solvent printing. “We’ve been using the LEC2-640 almost every day, and it performs excellently at a high workload... We’ve had the machine since September 2020 and it’s already made a significant difference to our turnover. We’ve developed a whole product line now that we have the ability to do small-scale work, and now the device is absolutely essential to our business success. Ultimately, it’s given us an edge against other print shops as it’s made us think outside the box and injected more creativity into what we do.”

St Moriz calls on The Label Makers to help refresh brand

A

s the UK’s best-selling self-tan brand by volume, and one of the oldest on the market, St Moriz enjoys significant brand awareness and loyalty. Earlier this year, the company launched its biggest refresh of its label design. Leading label manufacturer, The Label Makers was on-hand to help them achieve the look they were after. The changes to the brand style were largely driven by St Moriz’s consumers who helped the company understand what they wanted to see on the products. As the brand design had evolved over the years, mainly to categorise its three sub ranges of original, professional and advanced, it was decided that more consistency and clarity on the range was required.

“Having worked with The Label Makers since the brand was born, we asked them for a solution. They know our business well, our brands, how we work and what we

need from them,” says St Moriz commercial director, Fiona Lazenby.

“As most of St Moriz products use white packaging, it was important to ensure the label colours blended in well. After a number of changes throughout the process to get the right blend of colour, and the right adhesive to work with our packaging materials, we got the perfect result - the final labels were just as we needed them. The Label Makers are our number-one choice to work with - they have great capabilities, they are responsive, flexible and pull the stops out when we need them most,” she adds. The labels were all printed UV flexo, using spot pantone colours on clear PE, with the professional range featuring subtle coloured vignettes to reinforce the standout on shelf. The advanced range was further enhanced with rose gold foil detailing and a high gloss varnish for a luxurious finish.

“It was great to work with the St Moriz team on the brand refresh. We realised the critical importance of delivering on the design concept and worked collaboratively with the team to find the correct processes, material and finishes for each tier of the brand,” says The Label Makers sales director, Kevin Lyons.
