ABG investment creates expansion options for Print-Leeds
P
rint finishing equipment manufacturer, A B Graphic International (ABG), has recently supplied a Digicon Series 3 to Leeds-based specialist print house, Print-Leeds. The move will provide the privately-owned printer with added impetus to target the self-adhesive label market. Established in 2001, Print-Leeds provides label, packaging, UV litho and digital print. Its label division prints wet glue labels – wrap-around, square cut, punched and tube wrapped – which can be hot foil stamped or embossed. The company prints paper labels using UV or conventional inks with a gloss or matt varnish, which are destined for the beer, water and food industries.
In positioning itself as one of the most technically advanced printers in the UK, Print- Leeds sees investment in new machinery as the route to open up new markets and better serve its customers. The business started life as a repro house, before going into printing in 2001, and then into labels in 2013. A move
into the self-adhesive market is seen as “further evolution” by Print-Leeds managing director, Rod Fisher, who says: “Given our impressive infrastruc-ture, experience and expertise, we are ideally placed to make good in-roads into the self-adhesive label market. The investment in Digicon Series 3 is an important factor in making that happen, allowing us to create a clear and competitive advantage from the outset.”
Being modular in design, Print-Leeds’
Digicon Series 3 is bespoke to requirement and fea-tures a number of options. These include a flatbed screen printing module to add value with relief varnishes or vibrant screen inks, a delamination/relamination module for double sided labels, two flexo modules and an autoslit module to keep time consuming make ready times to a minimum. With the Digicon Series 3 using fewer parts to further increase manufacturing efficiency, the PC-based system allows for remote access monitoring and improved servicing capabilities.
“We are delighted to supply Print-Leeds with the Digicon Series 3. As a new customer, hopefully, this will be the first of many items of ABG finishing equipment. We fully share their drive and commitment to always delight the customer and we look forward to following their progress in the future,” adds ABD sales manager Mark Hyde.

A market first: Avery Dennison launches recycled direct thermal paper labels
A
very Dennison has introduced rDT, the first commercially-available direct thermal paper labels to contain recycled post-consumer waste. Direct thermal (DT) paper is a popular material due to its ease of use, high print speed, high image resolution, and wide range of compatible printers. Avery Dennison’s new rDT is the first recycled uncoated direct thermal paper label material available on the market.
“We’ve seen a sharp rise in demand for sustainable direct thermal solutions, especially in the logistics and eCommerce space,” says Avery Dennison product manager direct thermal paper, Vincenzo Palumbo. “That such a widely-used material didn’t have a recycled option available showed a big gap in the market, and we’re excited to introduce rDT to meet the clear demand for sustainable labels as well as
push the labelling industry towards more regenerative practices.” rDT is a BPA-free, FSC certified direct thermal uncoated paper that contains post-consumer recycled waste. The material’s performance is on par with standard DT paper, including visual appearance, conversion, printability, and barcode readability.
The company has also launched AD Circular, a comprehensive programme providing recycling of used paper and filmic label liners in countries across Europe. Through the programme, companies can use an online web application to schedule a pickup of used label liners by Avery Dennison to one of its recycling partners. The web app also provides useful data in the form of regularly updated analytics and certificates on the amount of recycled liner material, the amount of CO2 emissions they’ve avoided as a result, and more.
Collection and transport of used liners through AD Circular will comply with EU regulations, and the costs will be comparable to existing waste disposal services. AD Circular will launch in eight countries during the first half of 2021, including France, Spain, Belgium, Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom, before rolling out to other European countries in the latter half of the year.
