 Editor’s Note

Hello and welcome to the June issue of Converter magazine, which is fit to burst with sensational summer features, including the next big thing in Slitting and Rewinding. We investigate what’s happening in the Finishing Equipment space and

see the best of the best in Luxury Packaging. If it’s decadent, we’ve got it covered. We’ve got top tips for getting on the right roller tracks and in Flexo Technology, we showcase what you need to stand out. As ever, we’ve got the latest and the low-downs on what’s next, and

which tech is set to disrupt the marketplace. Sustainability is the word du jour, and the industry is responding to the environmental crisis with great gusto and enthusiasm. Whether it’s linerless labels or production of an organic material to biodegrade after use, the industry is embracing all options. In fact, we’ve got a great article from Boxmart’s managing director, on why she’s proud to be part of such an evolving sector as packaging, and why she’s positive for the future. So I’ll leave you on this positive note and hope that all your yearly

goals are being achieved, and that together, we can create a sustainable and eco industry that follows the five R’s of responsibility: Renew, Replace, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. For more, see page 30. If you’d like to get in touch regarding editorial opportunities,

please email: nmarriott@datateam.co.uk or call 01622 699 194. This is your industry and I always want to offer you a platform to speak.

BARRIER PACKAGING FILMS FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Innovia Films is launching the first of its new range of transparent high barrier packaging films, Propafilm Strata SL. It has been designed to be a standalone monofilmic solution or, to be used in laminate constructions to be ‘recycle ready’, or recyclable in countries which have the infrastructure to recycle polypropylene films. Alasdair McEwen, global product manager packaging, Innovia Films

explains, “Our new in-house technology has enabled us to produce a totally new film with unique barrier properties. Strata SL has a very effective barrier to aroma, mineral oils and oxygen even at high relative humidity levels ensuring increased shelf life and reduced food waste.” The fact that this film is transparent enables wrapped products to be seen

by the consumer, a growing trend in the food industry. This glossy film is also food contact compliant and chlorine free. McEwen continued, “All our beta trials during the development of this

product have been very effective. Strata SL has performed exactly as we expected, proving excellent machinability and printability. Some of our customers are currently running shelf-life tests to prove the product for their particular application, which will provide us with real test results. Our target markets for this packaging film are cereal bars, biscuits, snacks, dried fruit and nuts as well as tea and coffee. This new development is very timely in view of the industry move towards recyclability and a circular economy. Our next product launch will follow very soon and will offer even higher barrier levels.”

Packaging Innovations London set to inspire at tenth anniversary show

Packaging Innovations 2019 will return to Olympia for its 10th edition on 11 and 12 September, hosted alongside Luxury Packaging London. As the capital’s most exclusive packaging event it will bring the industry together in a festival of cutting-edge, branded and bespoke packaging, when it welcomes over 180 industry specialists to what is set to be its biggest show to date. For those looking for eco-conscious packaging solutions, Seufert will

present its new PET Blue Ocean material, designed to reduce unused packaging waste and conserve the world’s oceans. The new design has been created as an alternative to standard PET and utilises up to 100 per cent recycled content in the central layer of the polyester material. The virgin PETG outer layer provides an optimal barrier for food contact making it suitable for use throughout the food sector and the wider packaging industry. Similarly, Staeger Clear Packaging will showcase its transparent

packaging made from recyclable PET. The material used is made from a minimum of 60 per cent post-consumer waste and is suitable for direct food contact. Supplied in flat sheets, the material is then converted into bespoke designs for a wide range of markets including food, confectionary, personal care, houseplants and flowers, and general gifting. The company will also discuss its ability to reduce lead-times after investing in new machinery to allow the procurement of the material from the UK rather than the EU. James Drake-Brockman, divisional director of Easyfairs’ Packaging

Portfolio, concludes: “We are very proud to have established Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging London as the premier packaging event in the capital and are thrilled to be celebrating the tenth anniversary of the show this year.
