Age verification:
The next step in connected vending R

egulatory change is becoming a more regular feature of the vending landscape. From evolving health and wellbeing policy to tighter expectations around access, proof of age and responsible retailingi, operators are being asked to show that
automated retail can deliver convenience without compromising safeguards.
The latest example is the government’s decision to ban sales of high-caffeine energy drinks to under-16s in England from April 2027, subject to Parliamentary approval. ii
The rules forbid the sales of
these drinks through vending machines, regardless of location and buyer age. That specific change may remove one immediate use case for age checks in vending machines, but it does not diminish the wider direction of travel. As vending moves into more varied settings and wider product categories, operators need technology that can adapt quickly to the next requirement rather than simply respond to the last one. Age verification is therefore best understood not as a standalone compliance tool, but as part of a broader digital vending ecosystem. There are two aspects to this: successfully preventing underage customers from accessing regulated products and ensuring that legitimate customers do not experience additional friction when trying to buy those products – potentially losing the sale.iii
In
unattended retail, where there is no staff member to clarify the process, the experience has to be simple as well as secure.
AGE ASSURANCE IN THE CONNECTED VENDING ESTATE Modern vending is already becoming more intelligent. Cashless and contactless payments have made unattended retail faster and more convenient for customers. Telemetry and remote monitoring help operators track stock levels, machine performance and service needs. Digital screens and interactive interfaces can guide product selection, display allergen or nutritional information and support more personalised experiences.
