he office refreshment sector is entering a new phase of evolution which means some manufacturers,
like Crane Convenience, are revolutionising their portfolios to meet changing workplace needs. Craig Tucker, the company’s product manager – coffee, explains. Coffee has long been a workplace amenity, but today it plays a far broader role in the employee experience. Employers are looking for ways to encourage collaboration, improve employee satisfaction, and create environments where people want to spend time. Refreshment spaces are increasingly viewed as hubs for collaboration, informal meetings, and employee engagement. At the same time, employee expectations
have changed. Consumers are accustomed to premium coffee experiences on the high street and increasingly expect the same quality, convenience, and personalisation in the workplace. They want intuitive technology, modern design, and consistently great beverages. This shift is encouraging operators and manufacturers

to rethink what workplace coffee should deliver. Traditional vending and refreshment solutions are no longer evaluated solely on reliability and performance. They are increasingly judged on the quality of the experience they create. For operators, this presents both an
opportunity and a challenge. Rising labour costs, increased competition, and pressure on operational efficiency mean that solutions must do more than simply serve great coffee. Operators need greater visibility, improved control, and the ability to manage locations efficiently at scale. Connectivity is becoming a key enabler, providing access to performance insights, remote management capabilities, promotional tools, and engagement features that help operators maximise value from every machine. Connected capabilities provide operators with real-time machine visibility, performance monitoring, remote configuration, and access to operational insights that support more efficient service management.
shape a new generation of workplace coffee solutions. In response, Crane Convenience recently launched CALI™ 2 and COTI™ 2, a portfolio designed to combine premium beverage quality, connected technology, operational simplicity, and long-term flexibility. Different workplace environments have different requirements, so flexibility has become just as important as functionality. Large touchscreen interfaces and modern consumer-inspired designs help create an experience that feels familiar to users while simplifying drink selection and customization. Whether through intuitive interfaces, connected capabilities, or scalable platform options, the goal is to help operators deliver the right experience in each location while maintaining efficiency behind the scenes. Sustainability is also influencing investment decisions across the sector. Operators and employers are looking for ways to extend asset life, reduce waste, and maximize return on investment. This is driving greater interest in upgradeable platforms and retrofit solutions that allow equipment to be modernized without complete replacement. At Crane Convenience, for example, a new retrofit door architecture enables existing COTI and CALI machines to be upgraded with a modern interface, refreshed design, and native connectivity capabilities without replacing the entire machine. It is a practical example of how innovation can support both operational goals and sustainability objectives, helping operators modernize their estates while reducing capital expenditure and extending equipment lifespan. Looking ahead, I believe the most successful office refreshment solutions will combine exceptional beverage quality, operational simplicity, meaningful connectivity, and sustainability. The industry is moving beyond the idea of coffee as a simple workplace convenience and toward a future where refreshment plays an active role in employee experience, workplace culture, and business performance. As workplace expectations continue to
evolve, the refreshment industry has an opportunity to move beyond simply serving coffee and instead deliver experiences that support employee wellbeing, engagement, and productivity. Those that successfully combine quality, technology, and sustainability will be best positioned to lead the next chapter of office refreshment.
