heating elements, where it acts as an insulating layer and reduces heat transfer. Even a relatively small amount of limescale can have an impact: with just 1mm of build- up increasing energy consumption by around 7% because more energy is needed to heat water. Scale can also affect valves, pumps and water lines, contributing to reduced performance, maintenance issues and equipment breakdown. Chris says: “Water filtration can help
reduce energy and resource use over a machine’s working life.” BRITA Professional Filters, for example,

ustainability in vending is putting greater focus on how equipment and materials are used throughout their
lifecycle – from energy use and maintenance while equipment is in service, to reducing single use materials and, where possible, ensuring materials are recycled or reused after use. Chris Kinsella, water filtration expert at
BRITA Professional says: “Keeping existing equipment running efficiently for longer is an important part of that.” Bean to cup coffee machines and ware washers are significant investments, and their performance can be affected by something as simple as water quality. Limescale can build up on boilers and

deposits, helping to reduce energy consumption and prolong equipment life. PURITY C iQ builds on this by monitoring water conditions, consumption, and remaining filter capacity, giving operators a clearer picture of when a filter needs changing and helping them to get more from each cartridge. “There is a clear commercial benefit to taking care of equipment, too.” BRITA research found that, among businesses that had experienced an unexpected equipment failure, the average reported financial impact was almost £2,500. Seven in 10 operators said unreliable equipment costs valuable staff time, while more than half believe a single period of unplanned downtime could cause lasting reputational damage. Looking at equipment across its whole working life can therefore help operators bring together energy efficiency, reliability, waste reduction, and cost control. What happens to the filter cartridge
at the end of its service life is another consideration. BRITA Professional, for example, operates a filter cartridge recycling programme, returning up to 85% of cartridge content back to the recycling cycle. “For the vending industry, the focus is increasingly on what goes into keeping equipment running throughout its working life. That
includes filtration that can reduce energy use and protect equipment, monitoring that helps make better use of filter capacity, and recycling services that recover materials from used cartridges. By considering what happens to filtration products at the end of their life, operators can broaden their sustainability efforts beyond equipment efficiency to include how materials are managed after use.”
