Demand grows for on-the-go vegan products


From adverts on TV to huge billboards in busy cities – veganism is becoming impossible to ignore. Now as restrictions start to ease the demand for vegan options on the go grows, The Vegan Society believes this will open new opportunities for vegan-friendly vending machines.

nitially slow to come around, supermarkets are now competing against each other to stock the biggest vegan ranges while high-


end restaurants, previously sought after by meat- lovers, have decided to go 100% plant-based. Top athletes, celebrities and politicians have


openly spoken about their changing diets while schools and nurseries up and down the country are seeing a rise in the number of vegan children in their care. Interest in the vegan movement is at an all-time-high. According to a 2019 survey by The Vegan


Society there are estimated to be around 600,000 vegans in the UK alone, however many expect that number has grown rapidly since then. The last 18 months in particular have proved really encouraging in regard to a change in attitudes towards veganism. While conversations around animal rights and climate change were already happening, it is the pandemic that has made many reassess their own health and wellbeing and change what they are eating. In April this year, The Vegan Society published its Changing Diets During the COVID-19 pandemic report which found that 20% of Brits had cut back on meat

since the start of lockdown, with 12% saying they had reduced the amount of dairy and/or eggs they were eating with 7% reducing both. Of those who had cut back on animal products,


35% said they were mainly motivated by health concerns while 30% said the environment was their primary motivation. Twenty-one per cent said it was down to animal rights issues. This is of course pleasing to see, but how do


we ensure these positive changes stay in place, and people’s concerns about animals and the environment are still at the forefront of their minds when life returns to normal over the next few months? Options for vegans who are out and about are getting better all the time, but there are still some places where it is trickier to find plant- based food. In 2017 the society launched its Vegan on the Go campaign to improve the availability, quality and selection of vegan products in the out-of-home sector. It has been on the back-burner for the last year as we’ve all been staying indoors, but as restrictions start to ease the focus needs to be on providing decent vegan options when out and about – and this is where vegan-friendly vending machines come in.
