WATER

their empty bottle can come back to life as another bottle. Wenlock Spring director Matthew

Orme concurs that consumers are becoming acutely aware of packaging with a growing understanding of the term circular economy. “Wenlock Spring water is bottled at

source and each bottle is made from up to 51% recycled plastic, as well as being 100% recyclable. As more consumers recycle and the recycling infrastructure improves, the closer we will be to a closed looped system where bottles are used, recycled and remade into bottles.”

will inevitably lead to concerns about environmentally friendly disposal, recycling or reuse of cups, water bottles and water cooler bottles. The British Water Cooler Association believes that while small

pack waters met the need for convenient, good hydration without the calories in the past, today the environment is becoming a much higher priority. According to Phillipa Atkinson-Clow, general manager of the

BWCA: “Water coolers are ideal. People like the fact that they can drink water that tastes good, is chilled and is convenient. The fact that coolers are highly sustainable is a big factor – and increasingly so for homes as well as workplaces and public spaces. “Containers used for bottled water coolers are reused 40-50 times

on average and are fully recyclable. Water coolers – now valued at £133 million – are seen as the sustainable means of providing healthy hydration.”

SUSTAINABLE BOTTLES Harrogate Water is also taking growing awareness of sustainability and the need to improve recycling rates seriously by supporting improvements to collection and recycling and using recycled material. PR manager, Martin Crowson points

to the use of more than 50% recycled content in Harrogate’s PET bottles as a means to send a strong message to consumers that

SUSTAINABLE CUPS Managing director of 4 Aces, Chris Penn believes that sustainability is just as important as wellbeing in gyms, spas, leisure facilities and now also commercial buildings in both the public and private sector. “This means the cups that sit alongside the water coolers and dispensers are now a key consideration for those responsible for sourcing these auxiliary items. We’re entering into a period where anything that is easily disposed of must be justified. Consumers are far savvier and more informed about issues related to the environment and we all want to do our bit – including the water industry.” The company launched its PLANET range last year, including a

7oz size cup that’s suitable for the water industry. This biodegradable PLA cup is said to provide a green alternative for water cooler users and helps businesses to reduce their environmental impact.

Whether your facility offers access to bottled water from a vending machine, you have a bottled water cooler, or arguably the more sustainable mains fed cooler, it cannot be denied that the demand for water is rapidly rising. The industry must embrace this demand and offer customers what they want but do so in a way that protects our environment from the simultaneous growth in packaging.
