WATER

Healthy habits work for water

The demand for water provision is rising dramatically across the globe. VI explores this growing trend and canvasses the opinions of some key players within vending on the wider implication of packaging recycling.

Whether it be bottled water, bottled water coolers, or point of use coolers, the rising demand has recently been well documented by food and drink consultancy Zenith Global, which also expects the growth to continue. In October last year, Zenith predicted that bottled water consumption was set to overtake all other soft drinks worldwide with a rise of 92 per cent since 2007. Health benefits, convenience and price were singled out as some of the contributing factors to this trend. Meanwhile, bottled water coolers took Eastern Europe by storm as the economic climate improved, and the importance of hydration and convenience of bottled water became more widely accepted in the geographical area. In western Europe though, it was mains water, point of use coolers which were having the most significant impact with the United Kingdom retaining the overall lead for water cooler installations.

Richard Hall, chairman of Zenith Global said: “The water cooler industry is growing faster than the overall economy, because consumer health concerns are leading to increased habitual consumption. Mains water coolers are proving more manageable and more sustainable for increasing numbers of customers.” At the same time, the demand for healthy hydration has also seen

a rise in appeal of premium bottled water, described as “high quality, differentiated and inspirational brands, often with distinctive, natural heritage”.

WATER IN VENDING This new found love for water in all forms is welcomed by some UK bottled water manufacturers who have urged vending operators not to be left behind in catering for consumer demands. Director of Wenlock Spring Matthew Orme said: “The number of consumers choosing water continues to grow with each person drinking on average more than 50 litres of bottled water per year. “Vending operators need to ensure they meet the demand for

water by stocking the right size bottle, especially in venues which cater for adults and children. A 500ml bottle is ideal for hydration on the go, while 250ml sports cap is the best format for children and adults to carry with them.” Public relations manager for Harrogate Water Martin Crowson

said: “Continuing strong growth for bottled water is one of the most positive consumer trends at a time of troubling levels of sugar consumption, especially among children. Health concerns over tooth decay, obesity and diabetes make bottled water the healthiest beverage on-the-go, at home and on site.”

SUSTAINABILE WATER COOLERS While great news for suppliers, these higher rates of consumption
