Riding into the Sunset - A Knight to Remember

T

he most marvellous element about our industry is meeting fabulous

people, whether they be from suppliers or retailers. One such wonderful, highly respected individual is Lyn Knight who has decided to ride into the sunset and retire, handing over the reins of Abbey Appliances to fellow directors, Hanna Haines and Sam Morris. Lyn has been an industry crusader in the independent retail sector since 1984 initially working as a repairs and service coordinator. Though the UK economy experienced

a slowdown in 1995, foreseeing future stability, positive and determined, Lyn took the entrepreneurial decision by taking over a second-hand appliance business called ‘John’s Spares and Service Centre’. Her foresight was correct as later consumer spending began to increase, and her business grew and employing extra staff were ultimately necessary.

Over the following few years between 1997 – 2000, the business growth and stability of ‘John’s’ increased to such an extent this was recognised by leading manufacturers such as BSH and Hotpoint and as such, direct accounts were set-up. Despite the birth in 2000 of DRL Ltd [now AO

World], an online seller destined to disrupt ‘bricks ‘n’ mortar’ retailers, Lyn was clearly steering her independent retail business to provide better, localised service. In fact, business was growing and in 2002, besides moving to larger premises, Lyn also renamed the business, Abbey Appliances. As with all independent retailers, there are

many challenges, and having the right support then as it is today, support was crucial. It was 2012 that Lyn saw the advantages and benefits of joining a buying group, choosing Sirius which best suited her business. Deservingly, Lyn was eventually asked to join the Sirius Board providing her knowledge and support to other members.

When asked about various other monumental business decisions to increase growth, appears in 2018 one was hailed as amazing. To this day, her immense praise for the company and its people, Lyn commenced selling Symphony Kitchens. Consequently, in 2019, Abbey Appliances had its showrooms refitted with new displays. Similar praise is pointed to D.A.D for its amazing support during the COVID lockdown. The trail of success of Abbey Appliances has

been recognised throughout by her peers. So much so, between 2020 and 2025 – multiple accolades have been awarded at the IER and ERT Awards ceremonies for the business and its staff. Now in the very capable hands of directors, Hanna Haines and Sam Morris, the team of 8, including engineers, the delivery, sales and admin teams will continue the success of Abbey Appliances. From all the IER Team we wish Lyn a happy and enjoyable retirement.
