Tea & Toast or Coffee & Croissant? What is
your Favourite? Last year we reported our nation being known as tea and coffee lovers, and together these two beverages take the top spot for our most popular drink. Well, this hasn’t changed, we still love both our tea and our coffee.

oose tea or bags? Instant, Pods or Ground? We all have our favourite.
However, the interest of creating coffee at home has gained extra momentum over the past 12 months. Regarding sales, it would appear with wider ranges of availability and more competitively priced barista systems, ground coffee machines are on the increase in the home as more and more are waking up to smell and taste the freshly made bean coffee. The statistics have shown, in recent years, the UK consumer has become more discerning as the coffee market has seen significant growth, with a major shift towards premium and speciality coffees. This new trend has been influenced by the coffee shops and now extends to homes as well. Fresh ‘coffee shop’ quality, made at home, continues to rapidly grow. There are now many more high-quality brands with ranges of products and prices available to suit the design or practical discerning consumer. Melitta® recently unveiled the latest addition
to the Barista family with the new Barista SE, designed to redefine home coffee brewing by blending premium coffee quality with ultra- quiet operation.
The Barista SE comes pre-programmed with 18 popular coffee specialities. The four classics – espresso, café crème, cappuccino and latte macchiato are selected directly with a single, light touch on the sensor button. You can select 14 additional coffee variations such as flat white, ristretto and americano via the menu. The “Italian Preparation Process” in which the ingredients are combined in the correct order using an original Italian recipe, to ensure a particularly authentic taste. This means that, for latte macchiato, the espresso is added after the milk and the milk froth. For cappuccino, it is the other way round. For those who appreciate customisation, the machine allows users to store preferences for up to four individual profiles via the My Coffee function. The Barista SE is also equipped with a
whisper-quiet steel cone grinder featuring five adjustable grind settings, making it one of the quietest machines on the market. This innovative design has earned it the prestigious Quiet Mark certification, ensuring you can enjoy your morning coffee in peace without disturbing the household. The key features of the Barista SE include:
• TFT Colour Display with easy-to-follow step-by- step instructions.
• Height-Adjustable Spout accommodating glasses and large cups. • Pro Aqua Water Filter for optimal taste while reducing limescale build-up. • Easy Steam Cleaning with a one-touch function for hygienic cleaning of all milk system components with hot water and steam. Regarding the actual beans or packets of
grounded coffee, Giles Hilton, expert tea & coffee merchant at Whittard of Chelsea, states, “It’s best to avoid the fridge and freezer altogether, as the moisture can cause the coffee to absorb other smells and dampen the flavour. I recommend storing coffee in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight.” “This will help to prevent the flavourful essential oils from evaporating. If you do want to opt for the fridge or freezer, make sure the container used is well-sealed as this should help to minimise any moisture-related issues.” If it’s just a simple cup of tea with toast you
