feature: washing machines

“Samsung is always looking for ways to help our consumers, whilst offering tips on how to support our customers during this time. For example, washing at a lower temperature and reducing daily small washes is just one way households can help to save on their energy bills.”

Smart technology Thanks to the evolution of technology, washing machines have become smarter. Samsung’s Mr Barfield, says: “With our Smart

Control + technology, washing machines are able to remember laundry habits and suggest the consumers preferred cycles. LG says it has developed a number of

technologies specifically tailored to make its washing machines as intelligent as possible. David Palmer, senior product specialist, home appliances at LG, says: “With people spending more time at home over the past two years, there’s been a shift in people needing their homes and the technology in their homes to work a bit harder for them. “Whether that’s more innovative features such as a Wi-Fi-enabled washing machine that reduces time doing laundry or the need for quieter appliances while working from home – smart technologies are key to finding the optimal washing machine.” Smart technology and connectivity brings benefits to everyday life. Ben Peach, Haier Europe’s laundry product manager, said: “Having smart Smart technology helps appliances run more efficiently and makes them more sustainable. “Haier offers the hOn app, available across its

three brands, which helps users across the ranges of cooking, cooling and washing. So far, it has 4.5 million users – and this is growing.”

Mr Peach says that all Haier products will be

connected by 2023, so this figure will increase across Haier, Hoover and Candy appliances. “When users buy a smart appliance and connect

to the app, it helps them with advice, tips and ways to get the most out of their appliance,” Mr Peach says. “For example, when it comes to laundry, when users download the app, they get a free laundry guide.”

Advice for the sales staff Miele says that retailers should recommend washing machines with excellent energy ratings and also load-sensor capabilities to ensure only just the right amount of water is used, helping them to save energy, water and money in the long run.

Jacob Christian, Miele’s laundry brand manager, says: “Also make sure to suggest a drum size dependent on the house needs – a two person household may need just a 7kg drum while a large family or those looking to launder bigger items frequently may need a 9kg. “‘Auto Dosing’ features also means the machine

automatically uses just the right amount of detergent for the wash, saving money and hassle and helping to protect the environment at the same time.”

BSH Home Appliances highlights that laundry appliances are often bought as a distress purchase, resulting in limited time for research. Alex Lucas, business unit head, laundry, at BSH Home Appliances, says: “There are some relatively new technologies that could really benefit our consumers and might not be on their radar. “For example, washing machines with auto- dosing technology, whereby integrated sensors measure the volume of laundry, identify the types of fabric in the load and automatically set
