Precision LED Floodlightsoffers compliant lighting after dark
Illuminating the outside of a building aſter dark has become increasingly viable, mainly due to the lower running costs of LED lighting. As a marketing tactic, highlighting a local landmark or business with exterior lighting at night is an effective promotional exercise.
F
or instance, lighting-up the facade of a heritage hotel within an urban or country landscape raises awareness
to potential visitors and guests. However, this growth in external lighting has prompted central and local governments to respond by controlling the number of external lighting installations through tighter planning regulations. In reply, UK lighting manufacturer Integral LED has moved to offer a practical solution by developing a range of outdoor luminaires that enables the minimisation of obtrusive light using precision lighting. In effect, the new Precision Pro product line-up equips installers with a light unit that has been designed to help comply with planning guidelines.
External lighting: guidelines The impact of obtrusive lighting is categorised in three ways in terms of its effect on the environment and inhabitants; Sky Glow, Glare and Nuisance. Essentially, the ability to focus the beam of light emitted by the luminaire is key to the management of an external light project. Sky Glow - the orange light seen in the sky that encircles urban areas, caused by a scattering of artificial light by dust particles and water droplets in the atmosphere. Its effect is to disturb the local character of an environment and detract from the enjoyment of the outdoors. Glare - is the uncomfortable brightness that occurs when a light source is viewed against a darker background. This is particularly onerous when it falls within the vision of drivers on highways but it can be very discomforting for pedestrians too.
Light Nuisance - is a broad category which includes any extraneous light that strays over
boundaries onto a neighbouring property and causes anxiety for the people affected. Installers should recommend to customers
looking to undertake expansive exterior lighting work for a building that they consult their local planning office. Any project of a size that involves major works or the use of a lighting engineer would prompt this move. Especially, installers of sport centre or carpark floodlights would be recommended to check on the suitability of their system. Lighting for listed buildings is assessed on the basis that it must retain the character of the building subsequent to a lighting installation.
The solution: precision lighting The need for precise targeting of external illumination has inspired Integral’s new generation of LED floodlights, designed specifically with compliant outdoor lighting in mind.
“Our customers now have the LED luminaires with which to light buildings or illuminate utility areas like sport centres and playing fields without causing nuisance light,” commented Ricardo Colombo, Senior Product Manager, Integral LED. “Installers can achieve compliant outdoor lighting installations using technology that directs a precise beam, and can tailor schemes with the multiple options of lumens and beam angles offered in the range.” The Precision Pro features 2-16 banks of LEDs,
providing lumen output ranging from 13,000lm- 153,000lm. Each bank of LEDs is focussed with a precision engineered lens that individually targets the beam from each LED. This enables the light to be directed precisely. The range offers a comprehensive choice of beam angles, with certain models able to project asymmetrical beams to illuminate specific areas of a structure. In this way, certain architectural features can be ‘highlighted’ within a facade. The Precision Pro range has been recently widened to include models with an RGB colour changing facility. Integral’s new floodlight is rugged and
weatherproof, with an aluminium and polycarbonate body. IP65 and IK10 ratings provide outstanding protection from dust and water as well as very high impact-resistance.
