Safety first R

egulations, standards and legislation play a leading role in this month’s issue of Electrical Wholesaler, and elsewhere in the news I’ve

come across plenty of similar stories from across the industry – an encouraging fact (made all the brighter by the slow turn of the season). Despite our familiarity with the products and

processes that are involved in electrical wholesaling, and despite how readily and comfortably we welcome these innovations into our homes and workplaces, safety must always be at the forefront of our concern. The ECA – the UK’s largest trade association with almost 3,000 members nationwide – has commended the government’s decision to introduce electrical safety regulations in the private rented sector, having long argued for regular electrical checks to take place in privately rented homes. The newly introduced checks, which landlords are now required to carry out every five years, are vital to the safety and security of tenants across the country. Steve Martin, ECA Director of Technical,

commented: “An important test will lie in the enforcement regime, and it is vital that those with oversight, such as councils, have the tools they need to ensure landlords follow the law. It

is now key that the Government puts these plans into law at the nearest opportunity.” There’s plenty more to get stuck into this month, with Aico [p19], Schneider Electric [p22] and Hamilton [p34] all offering their own views on the ever-evolving face of electrical safety. Elsewhere, Seaward bring fixed appliance

tests to the forefront of the conversation [p16], Kidde examines the new Scottish building regulations and what they might mean for the fire and carbon monoxide market [p25], and npower walks us through some pertinent energy management strategies [p28]. This month’s cover story offers a comprehensive guide to PIRs – which Timeguard says are more than just commodity items [p10]. It’s also time to get your vote in for the 2019
