Timeguard’s top-selling ceiling mounted 360° PIR detector
Stock the right PIRs to avoid returns
PIRs now feature in almost every major lighting project, but you don’t have to make the mistake of thinking of them as just basic commodity items.
W
hile the cheapest wall switch may suffice for a job, opting for the cheapest PIR is never wise, not
least because ‘cheap’ is a mindset that leads to people to assume that the PIR isn’t working if the lights aren’t behaving as expected, and to come back to you for refund or replacement.
Replacing PIRs is time consuming – installers’ patience is going to be in short supply if they think you’ve sold them a dud and created extra work for them. However, assuming you’ve sold good branded quality PIR in the first place, the problems are more likely to arise from the installer specifying the wrong PIR for the job or getting the set-up wrong. It’s worth making sure your counter staff are
up to speed on the issues so they can advise customers. It’s always good practice, when asked for a PIR detector, to ask a few key questions to help customers make the right choices:
1. What type of lights and what load? These days the job will almost always be LED lighting, so make sure they know to pick a PIR

detector that is specifically tested with and rated for LED loads. You shouldn’t need to do the maths yourself: the specification on the box should already state what LED loading is acceptable – if not, steer clear. We think it’s always wise to add at least 10% for good measure). The huge difference between ratings for the same PIR detector for halogen and LED still comes as quite a surprise to some people. For instance, our new mini linkable PIR is rated for 1000W max. halogen and 250W max. LED. That’s because the LED rating has to allow for the strong inrush current on switching, not the subsequent low running current.
2. Check the small print? The LED loading data on all Timeguard PIR's is the actual LED loading it will switch, tested and verfied using an array of different LED technologies, with all the inrush current protection circuitry built in to the product for a fit and forget reliable installation. No tucked away labels on the back of the product or small print
in the instructions advising where capacitors or other components are needed when used with LED lighting.
3. What’s the Area? Looking for a big rating might also mean that a big area needs to be lit. So, perhaps a single PIR detector will not be able to give the necessary comprehensive detection field. Would multiple PIRs be better? The new Timeguard low profile SLFM360N and
SLW360N both have the capability of being linked together to give seamless coverage of larger areas switching common lights, a unique feature the professional installer has become a custom to with Timeguard PIR's. Maybe it would be easier – and less expensive – to be able to link a master and slaves together? When these come fitted with cables and standard RJ11 plugs and sockets, huge amounts of time can be saved on both installation and setup.
